Hwang, Sukumar team up to win title

Susan Hwang and Asha Sukumar may have been seeded No. 2 heading into the Central Coast Section (CCS) badminton finals, but the girls doubles team from Lynbrook ended up No. 1.
Hwang and Sukimar combined to win three straight matches to claim the CCS title, beating top-seeded Jessica Gasiorek and Julia Rotow of Palo Alto in the finals.
Hwang and Sukimar drew a first-round bye, then knocked off Kim Nguyen and Annie Mach of Silver Creek 7-1, 7-1, 7-2 and beat Christina Vuong and Vy Tran of Andrew Hill 7-2, 7-3, 7-3 in the semifinals. The Lynbrook pair then handled Gasiorek and Rotow 7-5, 8-6, 6-8, 7-1 to claim the title.
In girls singles action, Erica Lin of Homestead played her way into the finals before losing a 7-0, 7-0, 9-7 nod to Jacquie Pfyl of Gunn in the championship match.
Lin opened with a 7-4, 7-2, 7-3 win over Stephanie Dere of Aragon, but lost a match later to Pfyl. Lin dropped into the consolation bracket, beating Jessica Wong of Crystal Springs, Denise Do of Hill and An Ly of Monta Vista to get back into the finals against Pfyl.
Ly ended up playing for third place in the girls singles division.
Monta Vista's Ivan Lee won his first two matches before losing to eventual champ Jon Kucherko of Gilroy. Lee also fought his way through the consolation side to get into the third-place match.
Lynbrook's David Lamb and Mega Khiang won a couple of matches in mixed doubles play before losing to eventual champs Long Kim Hoang and Liz Nguyen of Independence. The Lynbrook pair, seeded No. 2 in the tourney, ended up second overall.
Ryan Aralar and Kailin Chou of Lynbrook and Tony Nguyen and Diana Ngo of Fremont also competed in mixed doubles play.
In boys doubles play, Lynbrook's Ta-Ming Shih and Min Chu won a couple of matches before facing elimination.
