    Parks and Recreation holds Summer reading programs

    The Cupertino Parks and Recreation Department is once again offering its popular series of reading programs. For children in preschool through third grade, the program focused on phonics and comprehension skills. The programs for children in fourth through eleventh grade focus on achieving substantial gains in reading comprehension, speed,vocabulary and study skills. There is also a program offered for high school seniors, college students and adults that emphasizes increases in reading speed while improving concentration, comprehension and recall.

    The programs will meet once each week for five week. One set of classes will begin the weeks of June 17 and another the week of July 22. Tuition is $269 per student.

    Indian sitar legend makes rare appearance on June 2

    On June 2, sitar master Ustad Vilayat Khan, one of India's most highly regarded living musicians, will give a rare performance at 7 p.m. at the Flint Center at 21250 Stevens Creek Blvd. in Cupertino. Khan will be joined by two of his musician sons, Shujaat Husain Khan (sitar) and Hidayat Khan (tambora). Tabla player Zakir Hussain will also join the performers.

    The concert will serve as a reunion for these musicians, who performed together at a "Festival of India's Independence" concert at Carnegie Hall in 1997. Tickets are between $15 and $50. For ticket information, call the Flint Center box office at 408.864.8816.


    New art show spotlights works by De Anza students

    A current exhibition at the Euphrat Museum of Art features paintings, drawings, mixed-media works, photography, graphic design, sculptures and ceramics created by students at De Anza College during the past year. This student art show will end June 13.

    Ambiente Español to perform at Monta Vista High School

    The Santa Clara multicultural dance troupe Ambiente Español will perform The Maiden's Visit, a ballet based on a tale by the Brothers Grimm, on June 1. Performances will be at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., at the Helene Madson Theater at Monta Vista High School, 21840 McClellan Road, Cupertino. Tickets are $11 for adults, $9 for students and seniors and $6 for children 12 years and under. For more information, call 408.241.1193.
