City will help residents to host neighborhood parties
The city of Cupertino is taking block party applications for anyone interested in coordinating a neighborhood get-together. Applications must be completed and submitted 30 days prior to the event; applicants are not charged a fee.
Residents can also request presentations about Emergency Preparedness and Neighborhood Watch, appearances by fire and police vehicles, or use the services of two recreation leaders to facilitate games or other social activities. The city will also pay the cost of an optional insurance program to cover liability insurance premiums for up to 500 individuals. For general information, call Laura Domondon Lee at 777-3331; to request an application, call 777-3354.

Clerk attains merit in field
Kimberly M. Smith was recently accepted as a member in the Academy for Advanced Education of the International Institute of Municipal Clerks (IIMC). The Academy is a professional body of municipal clerks who will further their educational achievements beyond the award of certified municipal clerk, an award merited Smith in 1995.
Smith, a clerk for the city of Cupertino since 1993, is one of 69 active California municipal clerks who received the distinction. To become a member, Smith earned an IIMC designation, attended a minimum of 30 hours of graduate courses at an IIMC institute, and showed leadership in national and state associations, including her affiliation with the League of California Cities and the City Clerks Association of California.
Animal control bill passed
South Bay cities--which may have to start sheltering their own stray animals instead of contracting with the Humane Society--got lucky May 12, when an Assembly committee passed on a bill that would delay implementation of the so-called "no-kill bill" by one year.
The no-kill bill would force several cities to get in the sheltering business--something they probably won't be able to do by the July 1 deadline.
The new bill, sponsored by Assemblywoman Elaine Alquist, D-Santa Clara, still must be approved by the Assembly and Senate, where it stands a greater chance of being put to sleep.
CUSD hosts meeting for potential board candidates
The Cupertino Union School District's Board of Education is holding an informational meeting for prospective school board candidates at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 22 in the district board room.
Superintendent Bill Bragg and board members will lead a discussion on the roles and responsibilities of a board member and provide information for candidates interested in filing for the November 1999 election.
The seats of boardmembers Barry Chang and Roberta Pabst are up for election. Terms last for four years.
Candidates interested in running must file with the county's Registrar of Voters between July 12 and August 6.
