De Anza College: Think smart, think transit
One may argue in a democratic society that the vote of the majority is often the best choice for the people. History has taught us, however, that this may not always be the case. As we have learned from slavery and women's rights abuses, the voice of the voting majority can lead to undesirable consequences. Today, we are recovering from many unfortunate decisions made by our leaders of the past, and we are being faced with the many unfortunate decisions by our leaders of the present. One particular decision of interest is that of transportation.
The automobile has swiftly grown to become an important part of our daily cycles. It provides us with unmatchable mobility and its convenience is highly desirable. Its importance in our society has paved its way into many roads, parking structures, mighty freeways, and its economic power is greatly persuasive in a political perspective.
Yet, among the few who rely on the automobile for a living and the many who are convinced of its value, there exist the underrepresented members of society who question the power of the car.
Around the nation today, these underrepresented voices are asking for a change in our transportation practices. The importance of this change is evident, its need is growing, and the effects of our current practices are devastating.
De Anza College has the potential of building a transit station which would provide safe, convenient and improved on-campus transit services. Though De Anza College is a small place, its decisions can play a significant role in the political world. It is time for De Anza College to recognize the needs of the poor, those with disabilities and those who do not drive.
De Anza College also has the potential of offering all students free annual transit conveniences. Both of these services would provide everyone with improved transportation choices.
As a democratic society that prides itself on justice and equality, let us provide services for the smaller voices. It's time to think smart; think transit. Give all students the transit services they need, desire and deserve.
