Youngsters set to debut talents in front of seniors

    By Michelle Ku

This month's Cupertino Senior Center's Monthly Social and Birthday Party will have an extra festive quality about it.

Meyerholz School's Primary Chorus of nearly 50 first-, second- and third-graders will perform for the community at 1 p.m. Monday, June 7.

The performance will mark the chorus' first public concert in its two-year history.

"I felt this would be a good way for [the chorus] to start performing for the community," said Marjorie Zellner, Meyerholz principal and creator of the chorus. "Next year, one of my goals is for them to do more community performances. I really want to see Meyerholz do more out there for the community. I would like to see the district have a concerted effort to do events for and with seniors. It's important for the children."

The 30-minute program will showcase a wide range of the students' talent. They will sing songs from three Broadway musicals--The King and I, The Sound of Music and Oklahoma--in addition to traditional favorites including "It's a Small World," "Candyman" and "Let There Be Peace on Earth." One of the songs is a Korean folk song called "Arirang."

"It's a pretty challenging repertoire," Zellner said.

The chorus was formed last year after Zellner became principal at Meyerholz. The school had a chorus for the upper grades, but lacked one for the younger grades.

The chorus rehearses twice a week after school.
