Local racer speeds for the sprint car circuit professionals
As a child, all Steve Osborne wanted to do was race. His earliest memories are of racing his bicycle against his younger brother Jim in the middle of the street. Today, Osborne is living out his fantasy as an amateur dirt-track sprint-car driver with the Northern Auto Racing Club (NARC). Sprint cars are designed to run short sprints and don't have transmissions--they use an "in-and-out box" instead (meaning the engine is either engaged or it isn't)--and they can reach speeds of 140 to 180 miles per hour. After taking a year off from racing because of lack of sponsors, Osborne is in the middle of the pack of the NARC point standings.
