Cupertino National falls 3-1
Delgado, Cavey make key hits in District 44 all-star loss
By Dick Sparrer
It wasn't looking good for the Campbell Little League major division all-stars.
Campbell was down 4-3 after four innings against Los Altos, and a loss would mean elimination from the District 44 all-star tournament.
But the Campbell kids proved they weren't quite ready to stop playing baseball in 1999. Campbell rallied for three runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to pull out an exciting 10-5 win to knock Los Altos out of the tournament.
Moreland, meanwhile, knocked off Sunnyvale National 8-0 before losing two straight to face elimination from the tournament.
Moreland lost to Sunnyvale Metro to fall into the losers bracket, then lost 6-4 to Mountain View.
Matt Delgado ripped two hits and Dan Cavey doubled, but the Cupertino National all-stars dropped a tough 3-1 nod to Santa Clara Westside. Josh Schroeder was tagged with the pitching loss, despite fanning six and allowing just one hit over three innings.
In other major-division games reported, Santa Clara Homestead edged Mountain View 3-1, Westside blasted Sunnyvale Serra 12-1 and Moreland blanked Sunnyvale National 8-0 despite an 11-strikeout performance by National hurler Chris Sedrick.
The major-division championship game is slated for July 21, 5:30 p.m., at the Santa Clara Briarwood-El Camino Little League field, off Lawrence Expressway at Cabrillo Avenue in Santa Clara.
Sunnyvale Metro and Santa Clara Homestead remained in the winners bracket, and Campbell and Mountain View were alive in the loser's bracket heading into play last weekend.
Junior All-Stars
Daniel Murrell of Sunnyvale National took a no-hitter into the sixth inning as he led his club to a 10-0 junior-division victory over Sunnyvale Serra in District 44 play last week.
Murrell lost the no-hitter when Ken Keast singled in the sixth, but he won the game on a one-hit shutout, striking out five, to keep National alive in the winner's bracket of the junior tourney.
Matt Martinez, Tyler Duran and Bo Caravalho each doubled for Sunnyvale National and Vincent Gutierrez and Duran were top run producers in the 10-0 victory.
Tim Strombel went the distance for Serra, striking out five and keeping his club close until National erupted for six runs in the sixth.
In other junior-division play, Los Altos blasted Tri-Cities 11-4 at Miller Junior High, and Sunnyvale Southern handled Cupertino American 11-4 on the same field.
Softball, 9-10 Age Group
Sunnyvale National and Sunnyvale Metro each pulled out victories in the first round of play in the District 44 girls softball 9-10 age group.
Rochelle Hamilton doubled and tripled and also came on in relief of starting pitcher Jessica Emerson to get the save in National's 18-11 win over Mountain View-Los Altos.
Audrey Gallien's double sparked a four-run rally in the sixth that lifted Sunnyvale Metro to a 23-20 win over Sunnyvale Southern.
The clubs fought to a 16-16 tie through four innings before the game was suspended because of darkness. The teams returned to the field the next morning with Metro scoring three in the top of the fifth and Southern answering with two in the bottom of the frame.
Metro turned the 19-18 lead into a 23-20 cushion with the four-run sixth, but Southern battled back in the home half of the inning.
Baseball, 9-10 Age Group
In baseball scores reported in the District 44 9-10 age division, Moreland knocked off Los Altos 8-4 at Earl Carmichael Park in Santa Clara; Los Altos #1 whipped Sunnyvale National 12-2 at Serra Park; Santa Clara Homestead defeated Sunnyvale Metro 13-2 at Carmichael Park; Sunnyvale Metro edged Santa Clara Westside 5-4 in a game played at Kennedy Junior High; and Campbell handled Mountain View 6-3 at Serra.
