The Cupertino CourierPhotograph by George Sakkestad Cupertino artist Sara Loesch-Frank's work includes calligraphy, drawing and painting. Commission names Loesch-Frank as Distinguished Artist of 1997By Pam Marino Cupertino resident Sara Loesch-Frank was named the city's Distinguished Artist of 1997 by the Fine Arts Commission on July 22. Loesch-Frank is a freelance calligrapher and graphic artist and an adult-education teacher. As an artist, her mediums include calligraphy, drawing and painting. She said her freelance work usually involves a lot of wedding invitations, but the calligraphy she does for herself is more avant-garde. "Maybe I'm a split personality," she said. Loesch-Frank layers materials such as plaster and gauze to create the background for her calligraphy art work. Currently four of what she calls her most unusual pieces of calligraphy are on display at the Santa Clara County Fair. "Every year I win first or second place at the fair, and my students say, 'Why do I even bother entering if you always win?' This year all of my students won and I didn't," Loesch-Frank said. Loesch-Frank has lived in Cupertino since 1976. At one time she taught art classes at Homestead and Lynbrook high schools. She was nominated for the Cupertino award by one of her former adult art students, Kay Woolfolk, a teacher at the city's senior center. The Fine Arts Commission chose Loesch-Frank out of a field of three nominees this year. The artists the commission considers each year must either live or work in Cupertino.
