Senior swimmer, Triolo, breaks national records

Eighty-five-year-old Cupertino resident Jim Triolo recently broke seven national records for his age group in the Annual Pacific Masters Long Course Swimming Championship.

In the long course championship, held in Santa Cruz, competitors swam in a 50-meter, Olympic-sized pool rather than in a 25-meter pool. The championship event took place the weekend of July 2325.

In the competition, Triolo swam the 100-, 400-, 800- and 1500-meter freestyles, and the 50-, 100- and 200-meter backstroke. His times qualified him for next month's national championship in Missouri.

Triolo swims every other day with the Los Altos Masters.

    Composting class offered

A free backyard compost workshop will be held on Aug. 7 from 10 a.m. to noon at McClellan Ranch Park, 22221 McClellan Road.

Certified master composters will teach residents how to turn leaves, grass and kitchen scraps into rich compost. Attendees will learn what can go into the compost pile, when it is ready and how to use it.

There will also be a demonstration of different types of compost bins, including worm bins. There are six types of bins at the workshop site.

Workshop attendees must pre-register by calling 299-4147.
