Clash in US youth soccer semifinals
The Almaden Clash FC, a boys under-18 soccer team that includes a number of top players from the area, recently advanced to the semifinals of the United States Youth Soccer Association Far West Regional Tournament in Albuquerque, N.M.
The Clash, coached by former Major League Soccer players Tim Martin and Dave Salzwedel, lost to a team from Oregon in the semi's after beating championship teams from Southern California, Arizona, Utah and Nevada. It was the second straight Far West Regional appearance for the Clash.
Members of the team included Brett Rodriguez, Paul Moran, Darrin Domingo, Nick Hatzke, Brian McCarthy and Kevin Sweeney of Bellarmine; Dan Oka, Hugo Serrano and Jared Racz of Live Oak; Nick Garcia of Leland; Chad Ira of Pioneer; Tim Harris of Leigh; Trevor Goodrich of Palo Alto; Eibad Ghori of Gunn; Scott Scigliano of Fresno State; and Phil Johnson of Santa Clara University.
Several members of the Clash will play soccer at the fall in Division I programs. Oak will join Scigliano at Fresno State and Moran, Harris and Sweeney will team with Johnson at Santa Clara. McCarthy and Ghori will play at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Rodriguez at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., Goodrich at Georgetown and Domingo at the University of Portland.
Rodriguez, who attended Blue Hills Elementary School and Kennedy Junior High in Cupertino before heading to Bellarmine, will play for a Creighton team that is ranked No. 4 in the nation after reaching the Division I finals last year.
"Rodriguez will play an aggressive outside back for the Jays," according to a release issued by Creighton. He will be one of 12 highly rated newcomers on the squad this fall.
