A woman's 'second shift'

    Second-story additions should be prohibited

Regarding the July 21 letter by Nancy and Henry Adelman on a two-story addition going up in their neighborhood: I had the same thing happen to me about two years ago. This person bought a house right to the side of my home. He added on this huge upper story, which, when I noticed it going up, immediately called Cupertino City Hall. I asked City Hall shouldn't we neighbors be notified when such an add-on addition invades our privacy and blocks out the sunlight we used to get. They said we were notified and that we didn't show up for the meeting at City Hall. Well, I spent some time going from house to house asking my neighbors if they did, in fact, hear from City Hall and all responded 'no.'

The owner hasn't lived there for some time now. It is a rental. Isn't there some way we citizens in Cupertino could band together to stop second stories from being built in our city?

I would gladly do anything to support an ordinance that would prohibit additions of second-story homes in already established Cupertino neighborhoods.

Ang family thanks local cities for support

It has been just a few short months since our son, Richie Ang, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. I cannot describe how grateful we are to a very wonderful, supportive community. There are many we would like to thank. Dale Jones, principal of Christa McAuliffe Elementary School in Saratoga, heads a group of loving parents, students and teachers. The Santa Clara Junior Theatre donated tickets so our family can attend a summer play.

There are many other people whom we don't even know who contributed to the Richie Ang Fund. Thank you for your help and kind thoughts. And please, continue to pray for us.

In Richie's own words: "Thank you to all those who helped me. I know God will help you, too. And I'm sure he will heal me very soon. Please, God, help me increase my weight, clear my stuffy nose and take away my pain."
