The Cupertino CourierNovember school board races take shapeBy Steve Enders The Aug. 12 filing deadline is past, and Nov. 3 ballots will be packed with candidates running for trustee positions in two local school districts. The Foothill/De Anza Community College District and the Fremont Union High School District both have seats open. There are no seats available at the Cupertino Union School District. Eight candidates total will be running in the two districts. In the FUHSD, trustees G. Franklin Pelkey and Hsing Kung will vacate their seats. Randy Okamura's seat is open as well, and he is seeking re-election to the board. Homer Tong and Nancy Newton will continue their four-year terms. With three seats open, the top three vote-getters will become new board members for the FUHSD. FUHSD candidates include: * Kathryn Ho, a Lynbrook High parent who is actively involved with the school's PTA and is an on-site school counselor. She also has teaching experience in high-school level math and science. * Mike Boyd, an electrical engineer and physicist who moved to Sunnyvale in 1993 from Santa Barbara County. Over the past 15 years, Boyd has been elected and appointed to various city positions in Santa Barbara and Sunnyvale. * Randy Okamura has been on the board for the past four years, as well as serving as Pacific Bell's director of government affairs and community relations. He is also a lecturer at San Jose State University and Evergreen Community College. * Avrum (Avie) Katz. No information is available for this candidate at this time. In the Foothill/De Anza Community College District, four candidates are vying for just one seat being vacated by Jay Jackman. Mary Mason, Dolores Sandoval, Paul Fong and Judith Moss will continue their terms. The community college candidates include: * June Elaine Lubich, a Los Altos resident who has been involved in various high school and community college programs. She was awarded the 1998 Foothill College Community Service Award. * Pat Millar, an educator with a Ph.D. in educational administration and policy analysis from Stanford University. Millar has an extensive background in higher education and directing studies on higher education. * Edward (Sandy) Hay, a geology instructor at Foothill and De Anza colleges. In his statement on file at the Registrar of Voters, Hay said he takes pride in his years selecting faculty and evaluating instruction in the physical science and mathematics division. * Joseph J. Krackeler, an independent consultant in the field of polymers. He has two degrees in chemical engineering, and has taken many courses at Foothill College to expand his knowledge in his field. He has also taught general chemistry at De Anza.
