Despite quake, delegation heads to Hsinchu City
A delegation of 12 Cupertino residents and 30 members of the Chinese Performance Artists of America, a classical Chinese dance group based in Cupertino, are still headed for Hsinchu City, Taiwan, tomorrow morning despite the earthquake that struck the island this week.
"[The delegation will go to Taiwan] unless I hear from the Hsinchu government that they are delaying the celebration," said David Fong, co-chair of the delegation heading to Hsinchu. "From what I heard, things are getting back to normal in Taiwan so we will still proceed with our plans."
The group, which is scheduled to leave early in the morning of Sept. 23, will help Hsinchu City celebrate the 170th anniversary of the construction of the city gates and walls. The delegation will return on Sept. 30.
Hsinchu City is located in northern Taiwan.
School district cancels facilities study session
The Cupertino Union School District has canceled the facilities study session scheduled for 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 23.
The meeting was canceled due to scheduling conflicts and will probably be postponed to a date in mid-October, said Beverly Armstrong, district spokeswoman.
High-speed chase beginning in city ends in Santa Cruz
A routine patrol stop by a Santa Clara County sheriff's deputy in Cupertino last week turned into a two-county, high-speed chase that ended when the Sunnyvale woman fled in the car and crashed at a Highway 17 exit in Santa Cruz.
Susan DeMille, 40, suffered minor injuries after the crash in the early morning hours of Sept. 17. She was arrested on charges of felony evading of an officer, driving under the influence and possession of narcotics. She was taken to Valley Medical Center for treatment.
The chase began at 3:43 a.m. on Friday when Deputy Kevin Greig, a K-9 officer who works out of the Westside Substation, began following a car that was driving up and down Valley Green Drive in Cupertino. The neighborhood around Valley Green has been the site of numerous recent auto burglaries. The car left the neighborhood, with Greig following. When he flashed his lights to pull the car over at Homestead Road and Franco Court, the driver took off. Greig chased the car down Homestead to Lawrence Expressway, then up through Saratoga and Los Gatos to Highway 17.
A second sheriff's patrol car as well as Santa Cruz police officers joined the chase when the suspect reached that city's boundary. The chase reached speeds of 75 to 85 miles per hour, deputies said. The car finally crashed at the Glenwood exit on 17.
