Skate park is good, but not in this 'hood

In July, you reported that, in an effort to make Cupertino "teen-friendly," city officials were considering building a skate park.

Skate parks provide an important place for young people to socialize and skate in a safe, acceptable environment. Building a skate park for Cupertino's youth truly seems like a good idea.

However, the selection of Wilson Park as a potential site for the skate park is poor. Wilson is a small neighborhood park, surrounded on every side by quiet neighborhoods and houses. One has to go through one of these neighborhoods to reach the park and there is very little parking.

Sadly, the proposed 10,000 square-foot skate park will cover in concrete most of the grassy area, where residents walk, exercise and play with their children. It will destroy the quiet atmosphere of the park and create an eyesore on the landscape.

Although more than 200 of our neighbors have signed a petition opposing a skate park in Wilson Park, we are deeply concerned that our objections have fallen on deaf ears. Vice Mayor Sandra James says she has promised to complete the skate park before she is out of office. We hope that she does not, in her rush to make good on a promise, make a terrible mistake by choosing such an inappropriate site.

We applaud the efforts of the city to make Cupertino more attractive to teenagers, but we would ask city officials to respect the residents of our neighborhood and choose a more appropriate location for a skate park.
