The Cupertino CourierNews BriefsCity set to host diversity forum tomorrow night The Citizens of Cupertino Cross-Cultural Consortium (5Cs) is holding a diversity forum at Quinlan Community Center tomorrow night, Oct. 15, from 7 to 9 p.m. The event is free and is open to all residents. The purpose of the forum is to focus on finding ways residents can better discuss cultural issues in the community, with the goal of building unity in Cupertino. To communicate more effectively, participants will form small groups and hold discussions facilitated by 5Cs members. They have been undergoing facilitator-training sessions with the Public Dialogue Consortium in recent months. The PDC is a group of city-hired mediation and communications experts. At the forum, the small groups will discuss feelings related to recent events, including the Cupertino Union School District's Mandarin-immersion meetings last May, the multicultural focus of the city-sponsored Fourth of July celebration and non-English signage around the city. For more information about the forum or the 5Cs, call Laura Domondon Lee, the city's community relations coordinator, at 777-3331. Taiwanese city may be a friend instead of a sister Cupertino will not yet pursue a "Sister City" relationship with Hsinchu City, Taiwan. Rather, it took a step last Monday to make it a "Friendship City." The city will still foster the same sort of relationship by pursuing business, education and civic exchanges. Cupertino will not, however, seek recognition by the International Sister City Association as a Sister City. Within this announcement, the City Council authorized $2,000 for Mayor Michael Chang to visit Hsinchu City in November to better detail the relationship.
