Megumi Takahashi runs in top 10
Matadors swamp Saratoga in polo
By DICK SPARRER
Megumi Takahashi of Monta Vista is a front-runner.
That's not to say that she's jumping on the bandwagon to claim to be a backer of the New York Yankees or St. Louis Rams just because they are currently doing quite well.
No, it has nothing to do with Takahashi's affiliation as a sports fan. But it has everything to do with her performance as a high school cross country runner.
Takahashi is a front-runner on the cross country course, and she proved it again last week when she covered the 2.95-mile course at Crystal Springs in Belmont to finish ninth overall in the Crystal Springs Center Meet.
Takahashi was ninth overall in 20:17.3 with teammate Sarah Burke 28th in 22:25.1, Ann Park 35th in 22:39.1, Emily Maples 47th in 23:00.6 and Alice Chang 59th in 23:35.8.
In boys competition, Julian Kolev of Monta Vista was 31st in 17:33.5 with teammate Paul Montanez 44th in 18:07.5 and Sean Yee 46th in 18:10.1.
Lynbrook did well in the lower divisions at the meet.
Jeff Whitsett and Chris Deal finished one-two in the boys junior varsity division. Whitsett covered the course in 17:06.3 for the win and Deal was second in 17:35.7.
Eugene Berson was fifth with Ryan Deal seventh, Chad Smith 14th and Daiki Kuwahara 15th.
Francine Lee was third in 21:45.9 to lead the Vikings to a solid finish in the girls junior varsity race. Sasoon Kim was ninth with Hyan Kim 11th, Stephanie Claussen 12th and Evan Smith 14th.
Lynbrook's Morgan Katz was 20th and Jason Whitsett 22nd in the boys freshman race.
A week earlier on the 2.25-mile course at the Artichoke Invitational at Half Moon Bay, teams from Lynbrook, Cupertino and Monta Vista all turned in solid performances.
In the girls large school division, Takahashi was 22nd in 15:18 in the large school race to lead the Matadors to a team 13th.
Lynbrook's J. Whitsett finished in a strong 12:49 to claim 31th overall and lead the Vikings to 17th in the boys' team standings.
Monta Vista finished 14th as a team with Mike Sweeney 59th in 13:17.
Joe Lordan of Cupertino led the individual effort among local runners in the boys small school race, finishing 20th overall in 12:55. Brian McDonough was 51st for the Pioneers, who finished 14th in the team standings.
In other action, Howard Chang of Monta Vista was 20th in 14:38 in the boys freshman division.
Lynbrook's Berson was 22nd in 13:37 in the frosh-soph race.
Cupertino's Alex Litvin finished 27th in 15:12 with teammate Wayne Cheng 46th in the junior varsity small school race.
In the large school division, James Kao was 30th in 14:47 to lead Monta Vista to a team ninth and Casey Courtney was 34th in 14:51 to lead Lynbrook to 12th.
In the large school division, Lynbrook and Monta Vista finished among the top teams in the girls frosh-soph race.
Lee was 10th in 16:13 to lead the Vikings to a team fourth in the girls frosh-soph large school division. S. Kim supported by finishing 16th in 16:48 with Kate Bossange 22nd, H. Kim 27th and Smith 34th.
Christine Yow was 15th in 16:43 to lead Monta Vista to a team sixth. Ann Park finished 30th with Andrea Bishop 51st.
Mats flood Falcons
Sean Cummings poured in four goals and Serge Azarenok added three to lead the Monta Vista boys water polo team to a lopsided 16-7 win over Saratoga in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League last week.
Eric Allen, Curtis Bruner, Eugene Rudenko and Matt Fisher-Colbrie supported with two goals each in the win and Oz Nir hit one.
The win was the first in league play for the Matadors, who are now 1-3 in the De Anza Division.
In girls polo play last week, Veronica Noone popped four goals and Stephanie Kim added one to lead Monta Vista to a 5-3 El Camino Division win over Cupertino.
The Matadors are now 7-0 in division play.
Pioneer split
Katie French knocked in a couple of goals last week, but the best the Cupertino field hockey could manage was a split in two games in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.
French scored twice off assists from Cristin Runfola and Alisha Harada to lift the Pioneers to a 2-0 win over Homestead.
But the Pioneers were held scoreless in a 1-0 loss to Del Mar. Cupertino slipped to 3-1 in the division and to 4-5-1 for the year with the loss.
Vikes, Mats net wins
Belinda Rungsea and Liora Gelblum each won at No. 1 singles to lead their squads to victories in girls tennis play last week.
Rungsea won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles to spark Lynbrook to a 5-2 win over Milpitas. The Vikings improved to 9-0 in the De Anza Division with the win.
Gelblum rolled to a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles to start Monta Vista on the road to a 5-2 nonleague win over Mitty last week.
Gelblum won again, this time 6-1, 6-0, but Monta Vista dropped a 4-3 De Anza Division decision to Saratoga. The Matadors are 4-3 in league play and 12-4 for the year.
Mats edge Falcons
The Monta Vista football team pulled out a thrilling 9-7 win over Saratoga last week in De Anza Division play.
The Matadors, now 4-1 for the year, will be back in action this week when they host Palo Alto on Oct. 20, 7:30 p.m., at Cupertino.
In other local games this week, Homestead visits Los Gatos on Oct. 20, 7:30 p.m.; Lynbrook faces Los Altos on Oct. 20, 7:30 p.m., at Foothill; and Cupertino hosts Gunn on Oct. 21, 7:30 p.m.
