Rite Aid says permits delay construction

    By Jeff Kearns

Work on a new Rite Aid store set to go in at 966 De Anza Blvd. still shows no sign of getting under way, even though the project was approved by the San Jose Planning Commission in August of last year. Right now, Bonsai Nursery still stands on the corner, surrounded by a chain-link fence.

Allison Costello, a spokesperson for Rite Aid, says the drug store chain is still waiting for permits from San Jose, but San Jose planner Linda Hannigan says Rite Aid already has the permits it needs.

"They've got a conditional use permit," Hannigan says. "It's so simple that it's kind of interesting that it took them so long to do it."

Costello says Rite Aid is still in the process of obtaining the permits it needs, and that it's still too early to talk about when construction will begin.

Rite Aid said in January that construction would begin in April and that the store would be open by late summer.

The 13,000-square-foot store will have a drive-through pharmacy and will also include liquor sales. The store's application to sell alcohol was filed with the state Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control in May.
