City seeks to fill commission posts
Applications are now available for the nine upcoming vacancies on Cupertino's advisory commissions.
The Cupertino Housing, Parks and Recreation and Telecommunications commissions each have two openings. The Public Safety Commission has three open seats.
One of the two openings on the housing board is a position for a business representative.
Incumbents are eligible to re-apply for all open seats except for one vacancy on the public safety commission.
Residents have until Dec. 17 to apply for the open seats. If incumbents do not apply by that date, the application deadline for newcomers will be extended to Dec. 22. The City Council will interview all the applicants in January.
Applications are available at the city clerk's office in City Hall at 10300 Torre Ave.
For more information about the commissions or the application process, call the city clerk's office at 408.777.3223.
Unwanted junk mail solutions
Residents whose mailboxes are overwhelmed with unwanted holiday catalogs and solicitations can begin to reduce the flow of mail to their houses by using the city's Junk Mail Reduction Kit.
For a copy of the kit, call the Public Works Department at 408.777.3337.
St. Joseph's holiday boutique
A Santa's Helper holiday boutique will take place Nov. 12, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Nov. 13, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the parish hall at St. Joseph's Church. Approximately 50 vendors will sell holiday wreaths, doll accessories, jewelry and ornaments. Food will be available. The event is free and open to the public.
Triolo, 86, sets records at recent swim meets
Cupertino resident Jim Triolo, 86, recently completed his best masters swimming season ever.
"I just had the best year ever," he says.
In July, he set new records in every race he competed in at the Pacific Coast Masters Long Course competition in Santa Cruz. He swam in seven events--three backstroke and four freestyle distances--and won all of them.
In August, at the U.S. Masters Long Course Championship in Minneapolis, Triolo placed first in two events and second in four others. In addition to winning the 200-meter backstroke, he also set a new national record for his age group.
In September, Triolo participated in the annual La Jolla Rough Water Swim--a one-mile ocean swim--for the 30th consecutive year. He placed first in his age group. He first swam in the La Jolla swim in 1931 when he was 17.
In April, Triolo took three first places, two second places and a bronze at the U.S. Masters Swimming National Short Course Championships at the Santa Clara International Swim Center.
Triolo has been swimming competitively since he was 10.
