Five Women of Achievement honored
By Jeff Kearns
Dolly Sandoval, president of the Foothill-De Anza Community College Board, will be one of five Cupertino residents honored at the annual Women of Achievement Awards.
The 27th annual awards from The Women's Fund and the San Jose Mercury News will be presented tonight (Nov. 10) at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose. The awards will be presented to 60 South Bay women in 14 categories.
Sandoval, who teaches math at Los Gatos High School and announced in September that she's making a bid for county supervisor, will take home an award in the education category.
Before starting at LGHS three years ago, Sandoval taught at San Lorenzo Valley Junior High School. She's been an FHDA district trustee for eight years.
Along with Sandoval, Maria del Carmen Sigler, dean of the College of Humanities at San Jose State University, also will receive an award in the education category. Sigler, who earned a doctorate in romance languages and literature from the University of Michigan, taught at Stanford before she joined the foreign language department at SJSU in 1987. She chaired the department from 1992 to 1998, and became a full professor in 1997. Sigler has won awards from the Foreigh Language Society of Santa Clara County and the California Foreign Language Teacher Association.
Frances Winslow, a winner in the public service category, is being honored for her role as director of the city of San Jose's Office of Emergency Services. Winslow was also the first woman to serve as acting assistant fire chief for a major American city, and has mentored women in the police and fire departments on getting past gender barriers and landing promotions. As part of her role with San Jose's OES, Winslow also oversees the city's terrorism task force response team.
For a science and technology award, the Women's Fund picked Eva Chen, chief technology officer at Trend Micro. Chen also holds patents for anti-virus software applications for email.
In the small business category, graphic artist Carrie Zeidman will be honored for her achievements doing design work for large and small Silicon Valley high-tech companies and for her volunteer work for public schools in Cupertino and at Congregation Beth David in Saratoga.
