Cell phone users encouraged to call sheriffs directly

According to Sgt. Skip Shervington, community resources coordinator for the city of Cupertino, when people dial 911 from a cellular phone, their calls are answered by the California Highway Patrol Dispatch center in Vallejo. To avoid unnecessary transfer delays, people should program the non-emergency number of their local police agency into their cellular phones. Those who commute through several different cities each day but still remain within this county should use the number for Santa Clara County Communications Center: 408.299.3233 or 408.299.2311. The call takers at this center are able to quickly identify the location and determine jurisdiction.
