SJ Hall of Fame
Five local sports heroes are designated for induction into the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame when ceremonies are held Nov. 13 on the floor of the Compaq Center in San Jose. Football star Craig Morton, basketball sensation Dennis Awtrey, Olympic hammer thrower Ed Burke, women's golf pioneer Betty Hicks and baseball superstar Carney Lansford are the '02 inductees.
The organization will also honor five others as amateur athletes of the year. High school athletes Trent Edwards (Los Gatos football) and Adrienne Herbst (Santa Teresa girls soccer), college athletes Logan Tom (Stanford women's volleyball) and Jeremy Guthrie (Stanford baseball) and special Olympian Lindsay Mibach (Lynbrook) will be presented awards.
The eighth annual induction ceremony will begin with a reception at 5:30 p.m., followed by a dinner and awards presentation at 7 p.m. A portion of the event proceeds will benefit the Silicon Valley Region of Special Olympics.

Golf tournament
The Bronco Baseball Golf Tournament, a fundraising event for the Santa Clara University baseball team, will be held Nov. 1 at Cinnabar Hills Golf Club in San Jose.
The best ball scramble tournament will begin with an11:30 a.m. shotgun start, following 9 a.m. registration. The $230 entry fee includes green fees, cart, range balls, tee prizes, lunch, dinner and a foursome photo. The cost is $60 for dinner only.

Volleyball tryouts
The Quicksilver Volleyball Club will hold tryouts for girls ages 1318 on Nov. 3 and 10 at San José City College.
Tryouts are slated for Nov. 3, 1:303:30 p.m., for girls ages 13 and 14; Nov. 10, 911 a.m., for girls ages 15 and 16; and Nov. 10, noon2 p.m., for girls ages 1718. Players should arrive early to sign forms, and there will be a parents meeting at each tryout. The fee is $20 per player.
