There was a downpour on Friday night at the Cupertino High School football field, and it had nothing to do with the November rainstorm.
Sure it was raining, but Homestead was also pouring points onto the scoreboard in a double-header win over Cupertino in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
The Homestead frosh-soph started off the rainy night with a 22-0 shutout win over the Pioneers, and the Homestead varsity finished things up by slipping and sliding to a 26-12 win over Cupertino in what proved to be the El Camino Division championship game.
The Mustangs clinched the crown with the win. Homestead improved to 6-0 in division play with the win and faces a league bye this week. The Mustangs, 8-1 for the year, will entertain Milpitas (6-2) of the De Anza Division in a non-league game on Nov. 15, 7:30 p.m., at Fremont's Diesner Field.
Cupertino slipped to 4-1 in division play and to 7-2 for the season with the Friday loss. The Pioneers will host Fremont (3-2, 4-5) on Nov. 15, 7:30 p.m., to close out the league season.
The frosh-soph teams left the Homestead and Cupertino varsity squads a sloppy field on which to play for the championship last Friday night, but the Mustangs still managed to come out on top in the battle of the league's two unbeaten teams.
Homestead fought back from an early deficit to post the 26-12 victory. The Mustangs were down 6-0 and 12-7 in the first quarter, but managed to score in each of the four periods to clinch the victory and the league title.
Homestead took the lead for good when senior quarterback Craig Maynard pitched a 76-yard touchdown pass to Ramont Thomas. Eric Dodge kicked his second extra point of the night, and the Mustangs were up 14-12. It was a lead they would never relinquish.
Cupertino actually took the early lead in the game when Jonathan Price picked off a Maynard pass to set up a 24-yard touchdown run by Ben Reynolds. The attempted extra point kick failed, but the Pioneers were up 6-0 early.
But Homestead answered back quickly. Brian McGee ran back the kickoff 10 yards, then Will Faules was off to the races on a 60-yard touchdown run. Dodge converted to put the Mustangs up 7-6.
A 17-yard touchdown run by David Poole put the Pioneers back on top 12-7, but once more the Mustangs answered right back—this time on the Maynard to Thomas touchdown pass.
The Homestead defense, led by Jeff Tucker, Thomas and Sean Carey, took over after that and shut down the Pioneers the rest of the night. Meanwhile, the Mustangs were managing a couple of more scores.
The 14-12 Homestead advantage stood up at intermission, but Garren Strong added to that lead with an 80-yard punt return in the third quarter.
A 60-yard touchdown run by Faules in the fourth quarter closed out the scoring.
Steve Conti, Eddie Sumpter, Robert Scott, Richard Scott, Josh Baquette and Tyler Jordan were other defensive leaders for the Mustangs. Conti and Artur Gregorian each sacked the Cupertino quarterback, and Tim Strombel recovered an onside kick.
Mustang f-s win
The Homestead frosh-soph team had opened the night with a 22-0 win over the Pioneers to clinch second place in the division. The Mustangs finished 4-1-1 in the division and they are 5-3-1 for the year heading into a 5:15 p.m. non-league game against Milpitas on Friday at Diesner.
Robert Ricana scored on runs of 55 and seven yards, and Craig Moberg ran seven yards for a touchdown to lead the Homestead offense. Ricana and Tim Kimball each ran for 2-point conversions. Ricana finished the night with 17 carries for 164 yards.
Mark Robinson, Greg Jackson, Kimball, Moberg, Matt Diehl, James Kruckenberg, David Nguyen, Grant Martinez, Branden Morales, Ryan Rasmussen and Frank Hernandes were tackling leader for the Mustangs.
Firebirds top Vikes
Fremont scored twice in the second half to pull out a tight 14-7 win over Lynbrook last Friday in El Camino Division play.
The Vikings had taken the early lead on a 2-yard touchdown run by senior Samuel Shyu and an extra point kick by Derik Hirozawa in the first quarter.
Fremont cut the lead to 7-6 when quarterback Mike Silva tossed a 65-yard TD pass to Jesse Enchill, and that was the score at the half.
The Firebirds picked up two points on a safety in the third quarter to move in front 8-7. Silva scored on a 1-yard run in the final period to make it 14-7.
Fremont improved to 3-2 in the division with the win. The Firebirds close out the season on Friday at Cupertino against the Pioneers.
Lynbrook dropped to 1-4 in league play and to 1-8 for the year with the loss. The Vikings will finish up the year against Los Altos on Nov. 15, 7:30 p.m., at Foothill College.
Matadors fall
Los Altos will take a 1-4 league record into Friday's game against the Vikings after edging Monta Vista 27-21 last week. The Eagles are 2-7 for the year.
The Matadors fell to 0-5 in league play and to 1-8 for the season with the loss. Monta Vista finishes up the year against Mountain View at Cupertino on Nov. 14, 7:30 p.m. The Spartans are 7-2 overall and 3-2 in the division following a 27-6 non-league win over Gunn last week.
Fullback Sherman Wang blasted over for a 1-yard touchdown run and Itai Mordo kicked the extra point to give the Mats an early 7-0 lead, but the Eagles came flying back with three touchdowns to go up 20-7.
Senior quarterback Jon Garfield fired a 55-yard yard scoring pass to Gavin Zack before the half, and Mordo's kick cut the Los Altos lead to 20-14 at intermission.
But the Eagles returned the second-half kickoff for a touchdown to stretch their lead to 27-14.
Monta Vista scored again, this time on a 5-yard run by Sean Pereira in the third quarter, but that was all the Matadors could manage.
