Soccer playoffs

The Fremont boys and the Homestead girls are set to open play this week in the Central Coast Section soccer playoffs.

Fremont, 13-2-3 for the year and 8-1-2 in the De Anza Division, will open the boys Division I playoffs at home against Overfelt (18-1-1) on Feb. 19, 2:30 p.m. The Firebirds are seeded No. 14 in the tournament, and the Royals are seeded No. 3.

The winner will move on to the quarterfinals on Feb. 22, 10 a.m., against the Westmoor (15-4, No. 11)-Watsonville (14-3-3, No. 6) first-round winner. The semifinals are Feb. 25, with the championship game set for Feb. 28. Both are scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at San Jose's PAL Stadium.

Fremont beat Monta Vista 2-1, tied Los Gatos 1-1 and edged Milpitas 1-0 in recent league games.

The Homestead girls finished second to Palo Alto in the De Anza Division of the SCVAL but still managed to grab the No. 4 seed in the CCS Division I playoffs. The Mustangs, 9-3-6 for the year and 6-0-5 in league play, draw a first-round bye before taking on the San Benito (15-4-2, No. 12)-Leland (11-5-4, No. 5) first-round winner on Feb. 22, 10 a.m., at PAL.

The division semifinals are Feb. 26, 7 p.m., at Wilcox with the championship game March 1, 2:30 p.m., at Valley Christian in San Jose.

The Mustangs battled Palo Alto to a scoreless tie after cruising past Cupertino 4-1, thanks to three assists from Katie Wilcox. Homestead came back to beat Saratoga 1-0 on a Wilcox goal.


Scholarship

The Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame is now accepting entries from high school juniors and seniors in the annual Art Rosenbaum Sports Writing Scholarship program.

Young journalists can enter sports-related articles published in their high school publications for the chance to win scholarships of $2,500, $1,500 or $1,000.
