Cupertino beats Milpitas to get even
By Dick Sparrer
It wasn't a great start for the baseball team at Cupertino last week. But after an 11-2 loss to Los Gatos to open the season in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League, the Pioneers didn't get mad--they got even.

Cupertino evened its league record at 1-1 and pushed its season mark to 3-5 with an exciting 2-1 win over Milpitas last week.

Michael Whalen singled and doubled to drive in both runs for the Pioneers in the win over the Trojans. It was his hit in the sixth that plated the runs that gave Cupertino the victory.

Milpitas had taken the early lead with a run in the second, and it remained 1-0 until Whalen's hit in the sixth lifted Cupertino to the win.

Jacob Haberman also doubled in the game for the Pioneers and Scott Fitzgerald had two hits.

Kyle Haberman was the winning pitcher, pushing his record to 1-2 for the year. The Pioneers held the Trojans to just five hits in the game.

Earlier in the week, David Stoykd ripped a two-run homer in the sixth, but the Pioneers lost 11-2 to Los Gatos. The Wildcats had opened up a 7-0 lead before Stoykd's blast, then the Cats answered with four in the bottom of the sixth to clinch the win.

Down the road at Homestead, the Mustangs split a pair of El Camino Division decisions last week, beating Lynbrook 2-1 before dropping an 8-2 nod to Mountain View.

Keith McLaughlin and Chris McKim teamed to toss a five-hitter to lead the Mustangs to the win over the Vikings to open the week. McLaughlin was the starter and winner for Homestead and McKim came on to pick up his first save of the year.

Each club scored in the first inning, but that single run turned out to be all McLaughlin and McKim would allow on the day. Homestead broke the 1-1 tie with a run in the fifth that proved the game winner.

Homestead's league record slipped to 2-2 and its overall mark evened at 4-4 after the 8-2 loss to Mountain View on Thursday.

The Spartans jumped out to an early lead with three in the third, then added four in the fourth to take control of the game. Mountain View picked up an insurance run in the fifth to take an 8-0 lead, but Craig Maynard struck a blow in the seventh to help Homestead avoid a shutout. Maynard ripped a two-run homer to key the four-hit assault for the Mustangs. Joey Faber doubled in the loss.

Homestead is home for a pair of games this week. The Mustangs were to host Monta Vista on March 25 and will entertain Saratoga on March 27, 3:30 p.m.

Lynbrook rebounded from the loss to Homestead with a 6-5 win over Monta Vista. The Vikings are 1-2 in the division and 1-4 for the year.

Monta Vista had opened the week with a 5-4 win over Santa Clara. The Matadors are now 2-3 this season.

Jack Chapman blasted a home run and Daniel Murrell ripped three hits to lead the Fremont baseball team to an impressive 6-1 win over Los Gatos in De Anza Division play last week.

Chapman homered and singled and Murrell doubled and singled twice to lead an 11-hit for the Firebirds. Matt Martinez singled and doubled in the win and Ryan Boardman doubled home a pair of runs. Brett Bonetti also doubled for Fremont.

Boardman was the winning pitcher, evening his record at 1-1, as the Firebirds held the Wildcats to just four hits. Fremont blanked the Cats over the first six frames before giving up a lone run in the seventh.

The 'Birds took charge early with a three-run rally in the third inning. Fremont added a single run in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

Mustangs unbeaten

David Krause and Geoffrey Bazinett were each one-over par last week to lead the Homestead golf team to back-to-back victories that left the Mustangs unbeaten in the young 2003 season.

Krause carded a 37 at the par-36 Shoreline Golf Course to lead Homestead to a 154-175 De Anza Division win over Mountain View. The Mustangs improved to 4-0 in the division and to 5-0 for the year with the victory.

Earlier in the week, Homestead had beaten a tough Los Altos squad 156-166. Bazinett fired a 37 on the par-36 Sunnyvale Municipal Golf Course to pace the Mustangs.

In El Camino Division play, Anthony Cochran shot a 37 on the par-36 Santa Clara Golf Course to lead Monta Vista to a 155-198 victory over Santa Clara. The win helped the Matadors improve to 5-1 for the year.

Cupertino split a pair of decisions last week. Jason Leong's 36 led the Cupertino effort in a 152-155 win over Mountain View at the Deep Cliff Golf Course, but the Pioneers lost 143-178 to Palo Alto. Cupertino is 1-5-1 for the year.

Lynbrook is 1-5 for the season after beating Santa Clara 138-153 and falling 169-178 to Wilcox. Andrew Chow came home with a one-over par 29 at Deep Cliff in the Vikings' win over the Bruins.
