Sumpter leads Mustangs to track win

Eddie Sumpter must have had enough of his team's losing ways. So the Homestead track star went out last week to do something about it.

The senior speedster won three events to lead the Mustangs to a tight 64-54 dual meet win over local rival Fremont in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League. Sumpter sprinted to wins in the 100 and 200 meters and added a victory in the high jump to spark the Mustangs to their first team win of the league season. Homestead is now 1-3 in league competition.

The Homestead girls also raced to their first win of the league season with a 72-37 victory over the Firebirds.

In the boys' meet, Sumpter was the superstar for the Mustangs. He breezed to a win in the 100 in 11.18 and raced to a first in the 200 in 22.46. His 4-7 effort in the high jump was good for a third win.

Homestead hurdle standout Will Faules raced to a win in the 110 highs in 14.88, and he joined with Sumpter to help the Mustangs to a win in the 4x100 relay in 45.69.

Pat Rugo, another relay team member, was first in the 400 in 51.93 for the Mustangs.

Linc Atkinson heaved the shot put 44-4 for a Homestead first and Wes Okumura was first in the long jump at 16-11.

Austin Sardella starred for Fremont in the meet, winning three events for the Firebirds. Sardella won the 800 in 2:15.20, the mile in 4:50.95 and the 2-mile in 10:48.29.

In the girls' meet, nine different Mustangs won events and Homestead won both relays on the road to an easy win.

Brittney Reynolds soared to a first in the long jump at 17-3, Allie Garnett won the triple jump at 29-6, and Abbi Keck took the high jump at 5-0.

On the track, Jillian Luu was first in the 400 in 1:10.17, Jennifer Saneinejaz took the 800 in 2:41.12, Megan Brady raced to a win in the 300 intermediate hurdles in 51.94, Kie Hill romped to a win in the 200 in 29.06, Sarah Newswanger sprinted to a first in the 100 in 16.50 and Rebecca Boyle rambled to a win in the 2-mile in 12:29.46.

Homestead won the 4x100 relay in 55.28 and took the 4x400 relay in 4:49.45.

Kelly Bushnell was a double winner for Fremont in the meet, taking the discus with a toss of 113-8 and the shot put with a heave of 34-4.

A week earlier, both the Homestead teams lost dual meets to Milpitas.

Faules won the 110 high hurdles in 14.50 and took the 300 intermediates in 40.19, but the Homestead boys lost 98-27 to the Trojans. Richard Scott was a winner in the 400 in 53.53 for the Mustangs.

Reynolds and Sandra Kiel were each twin winners in girls action. Reynolds was tops in the 200 in 27.44 and the long jump at 17-0, and Kiel was first in the shot put at 33-9 and the discus at 87-7.

In other El Camino Division competition, the Cupertino girls pulled out a tight 64-63 win over Mountain View. The Pioneers lost 70-56 to the Spartans the same day in boys' action.

Kate Nakamura was the star of the day for the Cupertino girls, winning three events to help her team to victory. Nakamura took the 110 high hurdles in 18.11, the long jump at 14-11 and the triple jump at 32-1.

Stacie Boyle cruised to wins in the 400 meters in 1:04.09 and the 300 hurdles in 50.47, and Joyce Lu rambled to wins in the mile in 5:54.37 and the 800 in 2:38.03.

Carly Bond came through with a first in the shot put with a 33-10 effort and Lisa Chang won the 2-mile in 13:19.

Ryan Vincente was a double winner, but the Cupertino boys lost to Mountain View. Vincente took the 100 in 11.65 and the 200 in 23.85 to star for the Pioneers.

Nicolas Medina was tops in the 800 in 2:10.34, Steve Dickinson won the 300 hurdles in 46.25, Brian McDonogh was tops in the mile in 4:50.06 and Joel Deschera took the triple jump at 37-7.5.

In De Anza Division competition, Lynbrook beat Wilcox 67-60 in boys competition but lost the girls meet 80-47 to the Chargers.

Chris Deal soared to wins in the long jump at 20-5 and the triple jump at 42-0 to lead the Lynbrook boys to the win. Luis Jensen was also a double winner for the Vikings, taking first in the mile in 5:01.7 and winning the 2-mile in 11:10.8.

Jasper Kwan took the 440 in 52.0, Chris Bencomo won the 100 in 11.1, Jon DeSimone took the 880 in 2:11.4, Durrel Roberts won the 220 in 23.0 and Calvin Wu won the discus with a toss of 125-5.

The Vikings are now 2-1 in league competition.

Aya Wakabayashi was a winner in the mile in 6:01.0 for the Lynbrook girls. Kate Bossange won the 440 in 1:06.0.


Faules third

Faules starred for Homestead last weekend at the Stanford Track and Field Invitational. The senior speedster raced to a third in the 110 high hurdles in 14.86 in the rugged Stanford field.

Lynbrook's 4x400 relay team finished a sold second in 3:25.05.


Mustangs split

Homestead slipped to 8-2 for the year but improved to 2-1 in league play in a pair of boys volleyball matches last week. The Mustangs outlasted Saratoga 12-15, 15-8, 11-15, 16-14, 15-13 in a league match, but lost 12-15, 15-10, 15-8, 16-14 to St. Francis in a non-league match.

Matt Rosener was the kill leader for the Mustangs in each match, pounding 22 against the Falcons and 25 against the Lancers.


Krause one-over

David Krause was one-over par with a 36 to lead the Homestead golf team to a 152-163 win over Fremont in a De Anza Division match at Sunnyvale Muni last week. The Mustangs are now 5-0 in the division and the Firebirds slipped to 3-3.
