Essay and drawing contest for youth

The Northern California Housing Opportunities Coalition announces its "What a Home Means to Me" essay and drawing contest for youngsters in kindergarten through 12th grade. The contest aims to promote awareness and understanding in young people of key issues surrounding affordable housing. Winners in each of the four categories will receive $750, which includes $250 for themselves and $500 for their classrooms and schools. All entries must be postmarked by April 11.

Residents invited to earthquake workshop

April is Earthquake Preparedness Month, and AAA of Northern California is offering a series of workshops to educate homeowners on how to protect their home and family in the event of an earthquake.

These workshops will take place at locations throughout the Bay Area. In the South Bay, the event will take place on April 24, 6­7 p.m., at 5340 Thornwood Drive. For more information, call 408.629.1911.


Ballet program holds student auditions

Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley School will hold placement auditions for its upcoming summer program. A placement audition is required for all students enrolling in the professional division as well as all open-division students ages 8 and above. Participants must wear light or skin-colored tights and ballet shoes.

The registration fee is $20. The audition will take place on April 12 at the school, which is located at 40 N. First St. in San Jose. For more information, call 408.288.2820, ext. 203.
