The week started out with the Cupertino baseball team in a pretty good place in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League. Unfortunately for the Pioneers, though, it didn't end up that way.
Cupertino took a 3-2 league record into play last week, but the Pioneers lost a couple of heartbreakers, falling 5-4 to Palo Alto and 7-5 to Fremont.
The two losses dropped the Pioneers from among the division leaders to the second division of the standings with a 3-4 record.
Wilcox tops the pack with a 5-1 record. The Chargers suffered their first league loss last week when the fell 4-3 to Los Gatos.
Palo Alto holds second place at 4-1 with Fremont, a loser to Wilcox in the middle of the week, third at 6-2. Gatos is fourth at 4-3 followed by Cupertino Milpitas (1-5) and Gunn (0-7).
Kyle Haberman blasted two home runs last week, but the Pioneers lost both decisions.
Haberman clubbed a solo homer in Cupertino's 5-4 loss to Paly. Andrew Ravadge doubled and singled twice to lead a nine-hit attack for the Pioneers and Michael Whalen had two hits.
Paly jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, but 'Tino tied it with single runs in the second and fourth. The clubs traded runs in the fifth, then the Vikings scored two in the top of the sixth. The Pioneers could answer with just one in the home half of the sixth and ended up losing by a run.
It was close again later in the week against Fremont, but the Pioneers lost this one by a pair of runs.
Haberman and Whalen each homered—Haberman a solo shot in the first and Whalen a two-run blast in the fourth—but it wasn't enough for Cupertino.
Jonathan Stoyko and Jacob Haberman each doubled and Dan Gandelman ripped two hits for the Pioneers.
Fremont opened up a 4-1 lead after three innings, but the Pioneers rallied for four in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead. Fremont came back with two in the bottom of the fourth and one more in the fifth, though, to pull out the win.
In other local action, Homestead dropped three games last week to slip to 4-5 in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL and to 6-7 for the year.
Will Hayes doubled and singled twice to drive in three runs, but the Mustangs lost 10-4 to Saratoga on Saturday. Danny Sizemore doubled and Easton Friedling had two hits in the loss.
The clubs were tied 1-1 heading into the bottom of the third, but the Falcons rallied for three in the inning and, after Homestead scored a run in the top of the fourth, Saratoga broke the game open with six more.
Sizemore had two hits and Craig Moberg doubled, but the Mustangs lost a 3-2 heartbreaker to Santa Clara.
The Bruins scored in the second to take a 1-0 lead, but Homestead answered with two in the bottom of the frame. That 2-1 lead stood up until the sixth when the Bruins scored two to take the lead for good.
Moberg homered, Brian McGee tripled and Hayes had two hits, but the Mustangs were roughed up 13-2 by Los Altos to open the week.
It was 1-1 in that one before the Eagles rallied for five in the fifth and seven more in the sixth.
The Mustangs will try to return to their winning ways this week when they visit Mountain View on April 10, 3:30 p.m. Homestead faces Lawrence Academy in a non-league game on April 11, 6 p.m., at Washington Park in Santa Clara before opening play in the Lions Tournament on April 12 against Gilroy at PAL Stadium, 7 p.m.
Dan Cavey homered, doubled and singled, but the Monta Vista baseball team lost a tough 6-5 nod to Saratoga in El Camino Division play last week. Cavey and Bjorn Walters drove in two runs apiece for the Matadors.
The Mats were down 4-1 after three innings and 6-1 after six frames but made a game of it with a four-run rally in the top of the seventh.
Monta Vista slipped to 1-6 in league play and to 3-6 for the year with the loss.
Lynbrook fell to 1-8 for the year and to 1-7 in the El Camino race with two losses. The Vikings were blanked 3-0 by Mountain View and lost 10-4 to unbeaten Los Altos.
The Vikings were held to just one hit by the Spartans, who scored a single run in the second and two more in the fourth to claim the 3-0 win.
Scott Malone drilled a two-run homer, but the Vikings lost 10-4 to the Eagles.
Mats unbeaten
The Monta Vista boys tennis team stretched its De Anza Division record to 7-0 and its season mark to 11-1 with back-to-back wins over Lynbrook and Saratoga.
Bastian Bartels, Robert Yee and Brian Low won twice in singles play to lead the Matadors to the two victories.
Bartels won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles in Monta Vista's 6-1 victory over Saratoga. Yee nailed a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles and Low won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4.
Ryan Chan and Dan Lee teamed for a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles. Erik Low and Eric Lee won 6-2, 6-7, 7-6 at No. 2 and Andy Chen and Michael Redenko won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3.
Earlier in the week, Bartels cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles and Yee won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 to lead the Mats to a 5-2 win over Lynbrook.
B. Low supported with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles and Chan and E. Lee combined for a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles. Chen and Rudenko won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.
Golfers win
The Monta Vista golf teamed rolled to wins over Saratoga and Milpitas last week at the Saratoga Country Club. The Matadors topped the Falcons 157-158 and beat the Trojans 157-164 to push their El Camino Division record to 8-2.
Cupertino, meanwhile, lost twice last week, falling 129-144 to Palo Alto at Deep Cliff and 168-200 to Wilcox at the Santa Clara Golf and Tennis Center.
