McGee hits, pitches Homestead to win
By Dick Sparrer
Brian McGee is a pretty good pitcher for the Homestead baseball team. And he's not a bad hitter either.

But last Tuesday he was both for the Mustangs, and it helped Homestead to an 11-3 Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division victory over Monta Vista.

McGee was the winning pitcher for the Mustangs and he also singled and homered to knock in a pair of runs to spark Homestead to the win.

The Mustangs improved to 6-5 in the division with the victory and pushed their season record to 11-9. Monta Vista slipped to 2-10 in division play with the loss.

The Matadors actually took a 1-0 lead with a run in the second, but the Mustangs rallied for two in the third, then opened things up with a four-run fifth. After the Mats picked up a run in the bottom of the fifth, Homestead put the game away with five more runs in the sixth.

McGee and Will Hayes led a 10-hit Homestead attack with two hits apiece. McGee belted the home run and Hayes ripped a double. Craig Moberg also doubled in the win.

Hayes, Moberg and Chris Bailey knocked in two runs each for Homestead.

Gavin Zack, J.C. Beeson and Mike Barclay had two hits each for Monta Vista in the loss.

The Mustangs will try to maintain their winning ways this week. They were to host Los Altos on April 29 and will face Santa Clara at Washington Park on May 1, 7 p.m. Homestead will be home against Lynbrook on May 6, 3:30 p.m.

Pioneers fourth

Cupertino ran head first into three of the top baseball clubs in the Central Coast Section last week in the Valley Christian Crown Classic Tournament in San Jose, and the Pioneers managed to knock off one of three on the road to a fourth-place finish in the tournament.

The Pioneers outlasted Leigh 10-9 in eight innings before losing to Valley Christian 4-0 and Bellarmine 5-1 in the third-place game. Valley went on to win its own tournament with an 18-8 win over Wilcox in the finals.

Coach Alex Byer's Pioneers battled from behind to beat the Longhorns to open the week. Leigh, 16-4-1 for the year heading into the game, jumped in front with three runs in the first and one each in the second and third. Cupertino scored four in the bottom of the third to make it 5-4 before Leigh rallied for four in the fourth to increase its lead to 9-4.

But Cupertino fought back with five runs in the fifth to tie the game 9-9, and that's how it remained until the Pioneers scored in the bottom of the eighth to win it 10-9.

Jacob Haberman was the hitting star for the Pioneers with a homer and two doubles to drive in four runs.

Kyle Haberman and Andrew Ravadge each singled and doubled for Cupertino in the win and Tankut Can and Fitzgerald also ripped two-baggers. 'Tino hitters finished the day with 14 hits.

Jonathan Stoyko was the winning pitcher for Cupertino, pushing his record to 3-2.

Things were much different for the Pioneers a game later, though. Cupertino could manage just one hits in the 4-0 loss to the Warriors. Valley pushed its season record to 17-6-1 with the win.

The clubs were locked in a scoreless tie through five innings before Valley picked up two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh.

The loss sent the Pioneers into the third-place game against Bellarmine, and Cupertino dropped a tough 5-1 nod. The Bells improved to 16-10-1 for the year and Cupertino's record was evened at 13-13.

Stoyko doubled to lead a six-hit attack for Cupertino.

The Pioneers will return to De Anza Division play this week, hosting Fremont on May 2, 3:30 p.m.

Krause stars

David Krause fired a 74 to for eighth in the individual field to lead the Homestead golf team to an eighth-place finish at the Monterey High Invitational played last week at the Rancho Cañada Golf Course.

Krause finished just four strokes off the winning pace set by co-leader Jeff Dwyer of De La Salle and Anthony Valdez of North Salinas, who each finished with a 70.

The Mustangs finished just two strokes behind seventh-place Salinas.
