Kritzer, Faules star at league track finals

Monta Vista and Homestead may have finished in the middle of the standings at the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division track and field finals last week, but not all of the Matadors and Mustangs were back in the pack.

Monta Vista and Homestead had their share of winners as each school ran home from the division meet with four gold medals.

Bobby Kritzer of Monta Vista and Will Faules of Homestead won two golds apiece. Jason You and Dana Underwood also finished first for the Matadors, and Linc Atkinson and Brittney Reynolds were each champs for the Mustangs.

Kritzer took the long jump with a leap of 20-8.25, and he came back to win the triple jump with a 42-6.25 effort. Kritzer was also second in the high jump at 5-10 with teammate Patrick Lee, a freshman, third at 5-6.

Yow supported Kritzer's effort with a win in the 3,200 meters in 10:02.15. He was also second in the 1,600 meters in 4:36.0.

Faules led the Homestead effort, running to a win in the 300 hurdles in 40.80 and to a first in the 110 hurdles in 14.89.

Atkinson joined Faules on the victory stand with a first in the discus with a toss of 126-8. Atkinson was fourth in the shot put at 45-0.5 with teammate Steve Kenney fifth at 40-8.5. Kenney was sixth in the discus at 116-2. Eddie Sumpter joined in with thirds in the triple jump at 39-2 and the 200 meters in 23.36.

Supporting Kritzer and Yow for Monta Vista were Nick BeDell, fourth in the 300 hurdles (44.21) and sixth the 110 hurdles (20.40); Sean Pereira, fifth in the 400 (55.39); Stuart Jones, fifth in the 800 (2:08.16); Tariq Hashmi, sixth in the high jump (5-0); and Scott Russell, sixth in the 3,200 (10:32.62).

Arthur Teschera was second in the triple jump at 40-10.25 to lead all Cupertino placers in the meet. He was also fourth in the 400 meters in 54.04.

Brian McDonough was third in the 1,600 in 4:38.22 and sixth in the 800 in 2:08.19 to star for the Pioneers. Steve Dickinson was fifth in the 300 hurdles (44.75) with Kaoru Takada sixth (44.80); Jason Yih was fifth in the 3,200 (10:32.53); Renato Linares was fifth in the long jump (19-1); and Travis Scibetta was sixth in the triple jump (38-7.75).

Underwood and Reynolds took top honors in girls competition the same day.

Underwood cruised to a win in the 800 meters for the Matadors. Her winning time of 2:23.66 was more than five seconds faster than her nearest rival. She was also fourth in the 1,600 meters in 5:29.53.

Reynolds soared to a first in the long jump at 17-5. The senior also ran second in the 200 meters in 27.28. She topped a list of Homestead placers that also included Sandra Kiel, fifth in the discus (88-1); Rebecca Boyle, fifth in the 3,200 (12:25.43); and Megan Brady, fifth in the 300 hurdles (52.35).

Supporting Underwood's effort for Monta Vista were Kylie Ratkovich, second in the 300 hurdles (50.23) and third in the 100 hurdles (17.02); Julia Co, third in the long jump (15-9.25) and second in the triple jump (32-11); Stephanie Cochrane, fourth in the 300 hurdles (51.69); Rachael Doran, fifth in the high jump (4-6); Connie Shieh, sixth in the long jump (14-9), sixth in the triple jump (31-3) and sixth in the 800 (2:36.43); and Christine Hwang, sixth in the 100 hurdles (18.10).

Cupertino had no winners, but Stacie Boyle led the Pioneers with a couple of seconds and a third.

Boyle was second in both the 400 in 1:00.79 and the 800 in 2:28.97, and she was third in the 300 hurdles in 51.23 with teammate Erica Buchinski sixth.

Kimberly Chew was second in the 1,600 meters in 5:23.40 and third in the 800 in 2:29.34, and Kate Nakamura was third in the triple jump at 32-0.5 and fourth in both the long jump at 15-3 and the 100 hurdles in 17.8. Buchinski was fifth in the 100 hurdles in 17.96.

Lisa Chang was fourth in the 3,200 in 12:21.53 and sixth in the high jump at 4-6, and Melanie Boyle was fourth in the triple jump at 31-7.
