Vike swimmers set new league relay record
By Dick Sparrer
It was a great day for the Mountain View swimming and diving teams at the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division finals.

And it wasn't a bad day for the swimmers from Lynbrook and Cupertino, either.

Mountain View was cooking, churning through the Lynbrook waters to set nine league records while winning the boys and girls team championships.

But while the Spartans were winning the league titles, the Vikings and Pioneers had swimmers finishing among the leaders and Lynbrook swimmers also managed to set a new league mark.

Sophomore Michael Wang teamed with seniors Cole Robinson, Lawrence Ma and Steve Jian to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:33.44.

Jian and Robinson were the individual leaders for the Vikings in the meet. Jian won league titles in the 200 free in 1:49.02 and the 100 free in 50.27. Robinson added a first in the 50 free in 22.60 and a second in the 100 free in 55.56.

The Lynbrook foursome of Chris Chen, Andrew Wu, Allen Dai and Brian Yen nailed second in the 200 medley relay in 1:50.69.

Wu added a second in the 100 breast in 1:04.96.

Jian, Wang, Ma and Robinson picked up a second in the 400 free relay in 3:22.67.

For Cupertino, Josh Overby was the boys leader. He was first in the 500 free in 4:55.87 and second in the 200 free in 1:50.60, with teammate Stephen Frink third in 1:51.58. Wang was second in the 200 individual medley in 2:02.52 and Michael Jarvis was second in the 50 free in 23.36 and second in the 100 free in 52.20.

Cupertino finished second to Lynbrook in the 200 free relay. Frink, Charlton Yih, Alex Donoghue and Jarvis combined for a 1:35.96.

Frink was third in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.32 for the Pioneers.

For the Lynbrook girls, the foursome of Jenny Wei, SongQian Li, Nilasha Ghosh and Jessica Chen won the 200 medley relay in 1:58.67. The Vikes were second in the 400 free relay with Wei, Deanna Tham, Eileen Shu and Ghosh swimming 3:55.18, and they were second in the 200 free relay with Chen, Tham, Michelle Linn and Lilian Lam swimming 1:49.76.

Ghosh breezed to a league title in the 100 back in 59.58 and she was second in the 100 fly in 57.82. Chen was second in the 100 free in 58.73, Li was second in the 100 breast in 1:14.48, Wei nailed a third in the 200 IM in 2:22.99 and Shu was third in the 200 free in 2:11.73 and second in the 500 free in 5:49.71.

Cupertino was third in all three relays— Alicia Zhou, Karin Tanaka, Alison Rahn and Sarah Hovland going 2:04.29 in the 200 medley; Rahn, Katie Fischer, Megan Weber and Hovland finishing in 1:51.29 in the 200 free; and Fischer, Weber, Tanaka and Zhou swimming 4:11.53 in the 400 free.

Hovland was the featured performer for the Cupertino girls. The junior won the 100 breast in 1:11.84 and was second in the 50 free in 25.95. Jenna Overby was third in the 100 free in 58.58 and Zhou was third in the 100 back in 1:07.17.
