With senior goalkeeper Shannon Rudd in the cage, the women's lacrosse team at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo rolled through a 20-2 season that included a championship at the U.S. Lacrosse Women's Division Intercollegiate Associates finals.

It marked the third straight national title for the Mustangs, an accomplishment unmatched by any other school. Cal Poly, after beating the University of Pittsburgh 15-8 and Michigan 13-4, edged UCLA 11-9 in the finals.

Rudd, who played basketball and field hockey at Cupertino High School, was also the goalkeeper for the Cal Poly women's field hockey. She is a 1999 graduate of Cupertino High.


CyberRays camps

The San Jose CyberRays, the local women's professional soccer team, will host a four-day summer camp for girls, focusing on the fundamentals and tactical skills needed to play soccer.

The camp, for girls ages 8­16, is scheduled for June 2­5 at West Valley College in Saratoga. Sessions run 5­7 p.m. and the cost is $180 per player. Players will be separated according to age and skill level, and goalkeeper specific training will be available.

A camp for teams is set for July 21­24 at West Valley. Sessions run from 5­6:30 p.m. or 6:30­8 p.m. and the cost is $160 per player (based on a minimum of 12 players per team). There is no charge for coaches.

Hockey camp

A girls field hockey camp for beginning players in grades 5­9 will be held June 24­26 at Del Mar High School. The cost is $40 per player for the camp that runs 9 a.m.­noon. Equipment will be provided. Call 408.264.2373.
