The old baseball adage "good pitching will beat good hitting every time" was challenged on July 3—and it was the Campbell Little League major division all-stars who were proving the old theory wrong.
Oh, there was good pitching when Campbell and Sunnvyale Southern squared off in the District 44 major division all-star game at Cupertino National's diamond at Kennedy Middle School. But it was the Campbell hitters playing the starring role in their 7-1 win over Southern.
Abe Matsui led the way as Campbell blasted 11 hits on the road to its third straight win of the tournament.
Campbell had opened by blanking Santa Clara Westside 3-0, then edged Cupertino American 3-2 before rolling over Southern on the day before the Fourth of July.
The fireworks started early for Campbell. Matsui doubled and singled twice to lead the display for the Campbell kids. Cory Jacobson doubled twice for the winners and Chase Volgena singled and doubled.
Connor Bernarding and Cory Jacobson each ripped a pair of hits and James Weimer and Patrick Moniz each doubled. No Campbell hitter struck out in the game.
Pitchers Weimer and Dan Farias combined for a 5-hitter, allowing just a single run in the first. Each Campbell hurler tossed three innings in the win.
Patrick Downey did it all for Moreland in a 12-6 win over Cupertino National the same day. Downey allowed four hits and struck out six in five innings to get the pitching for Moreland, and he was also 4 for 4 at the plate with a home run and a double, driving in five runs for his club.
It was a slugfest for three innings. Downey's run-scoring double sparked a three-run first for Moreland, and his three-run homer keyed a four-run second.
But Chase Hayhurst singled home a run to help Cupertino National to a two-run rally in the top of the second, and National added three in the top of the third when Nick Tong was hit by a pitch, Justin Rahn singled and Mitchell Plank belted a three-run homer.
Moreland picked up two in the bottom of the third, though, then scored two in the fourth and one more in the fifth to win it.
Downey led Moreland with his four hits and Kenny Pope and Kevin Roeder each doubled.
James Roberts tossed a gem to lead Tri-Cities to a 6-1 win over Sunnyvale Serra. Roberts went the distance to fire a 1-hitter, striking out 13 in the win. He took a no-hit, no-run game into the sixth inning before a run-scoring single by Serra ended his bid for the no-hitter.
Roberts helped his own cause at the plate with a double.
Alex Wu went the distance to whirl a 6-hitter, striking out nine, to lead Cupertino National to a 7-4 win over Los Altos. Wu struck out the last six hitters he faced to nail down the victory.
National took command of the game in the third with Plank singled home a run and Matthew Whitehill singled home two more to spark a four-run rally.
Rahn put National up 6-1 when he crushed a two-run homer to right-center in the top of the fourth.
National's final run came in the sixth on a run-scoring single by Chris Cantwell.
Rahn was 4 for 4 with a double and knocked in three runs to lead Cupertino National to a one-sided 13-0 win over Santa Clara Homestead in the tournament's first round.
It was a bases-loaded double by Rahn in the first inning that set the tone for the game. All three runs scored when Rahn's line shot ricocheted off the outfield fence.
Plank blasted a three-run homer in the second for National. Plank was 3 for 4 with a double and homer to plate five runs in the win. Wu had three hits and Cantwell had two in the game, and Jay Voigt and Hayhurst each doubled. Cantwell tossed three innings, allowing just three hits, to get the pitching win, and Rahn finished up by tossing the fourth inning.
