Candidates filed, school board is extended
By I-chun Che
The papers are in.

Four Cupertino residents are running for two city council seats in the November election.

The terms of Mayor Michael Chang and Councilman Richard Lowenthal will end in November. Because of term limits, only Lowenthal is eligible to run again. He filed candidacy papers on Aug. 5.

The other three candidates are Deborah Barrett, a retired attorney; Ronald Moore, producer of public-access senior program The Better Part; and Kris Wang, a Parks and Recreation commissioner. All three filed their candidacy papers on Aug. 8.

Council members serve four-year, staggered terms, with a two-term limit. Vice Mayor Sandra James, council members Dolly Sandoval and Patrick Kwok will retain their seats for the next two years.

In the Cupertino Union School District Board election, two of the five seats will be vacated. The terms of Josephine Lucey and Barry Chang will end in November.

So far, seven people have pulled out the application forms but only Lucey has filed her papers. It is still unknown who will run against her. The deadline is extended to Aug. 13 because Chang decided not to run for reelection, saying he wants to spend more time with his family. The six people that have pulled application forms but not filed candidacy papers include Chiachi Chao, Lynette Lee Eng, Robert Lee Heslop, Elizabeth Tadman, George Tyson and Gilbert Wong.

Residents can obtain information about City Council candidates from the Cupertino City Clerk's Office at 408.777.3223. Campaign disclosure statements and other documents will be available on the city website at http://www.cupertino.org.
