Man arrested for murder is denied bail
By I-chun Che
A Cupertino man charged with murdering his wife was denied bail and pleaded innocent.

Jason Y. Cai, a 44-year-old software engineer, was arrested June 26 after authorities found Ying Deng, his wife of six weeks, floating in the couple's backyard swimming pool.

"Under normal circumstances, there is no bail in the crime of murder," said Deputy District Attorney Edward Fernandez.

Fernandez said both he and Cai's attorney, Richard Pointer, are waiting for Deng's autopsy report from the Santa Clara County Coroner's Office. The autopsy report will be key in determining the cause of Deng's death.

According to Terrance Helm, spokesman for the Santa Clara County Office of the Sheriff, Cai called the sheriff's department at 9:19 p.m. on June 25 to report his wife missing.

Responding deputies later located Deng's body floating face down under the cover of the swimming pool. She was pronounced dead at the scene. After some investigation, Cai was arrested for murder.

According to Helm, one of the reasons for Cai's arrest was inconsistency of his statements to investigators.

According to the sheriff's office, Cai stated that he saw his wife in their home when he returned from work at about 5 p.m. on June 25. For the next three hours, he said he worked on his computer in the living room while his wife did house chores. At 8 p.m., Cai said, he became suspicious because his wife had not prepared dinner. He cooked dinner and ate by himself and at 9:20 p.m. he called 911.

Cai has lived in his home on Kingsbury Court for five years. Cai's ex-wife and daughter moved out of the residence after the couple divorced. He married Deng on May 13 after he met her in China and brought her to the United States.

Detectives are investigating the case. Cai's next court date is scheduled for Aug. 27.
