Lacerenza new adult ed. head

Barbara Lacerenza was appointed Director of the Fremont Union High School District's adult and community education for the 20032004 school year. Lacerenza takes over as director for Peggy Raun-Linde, who was named principal of Fremont High School last June.

Lacerenza is a seasoned administrator in the area of alternative programs and educational options. She came to the Fremont Union High School District in 1988, and after working for two years as assistant principal at Cupertino High School, she became coordinator of the district's alternative education programs. This included serving as principal of the district's Phoenix Alternative High School program and supervising the New Start Independent Study Program, the teen parenting program with its baby-care center, home teaching, and Middle College. In 1996 she supervised two additional programs, Horizons Special Education Directed Study Program and College Advantage.

Lacerenza holds bachelor's degrees in physical education and English and a master's degree in educational administration.

De Anza College adding more than 60 courses

De Anza College is the place for people who want to learn Urdu, the language spoken in Pakistan. It's the place to examine California's political and diplomatic history, to polish one's fiction writing or poetry skills, to learn about intellectual property law, to understand how the United Nations addresses global issues and to take high-tech courses such as network security.

These are just some of the more than 60 new courses that will be taught in the fall quarter, which begins Sept. 22. With the budget crisis, the state-mandated fee has increased to $12 a unit.

Note that not all courses are offered each quarter.

Visit the college's website at http://www.deanza.edu to review a complete listing of fall course offerings and/or to apply online.

Once students apply, they receive a date and time to register. Then the student may choose to register either online or by telephone.

The last day to apply and register online for fall quarter is Sept. 18, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. The number for the admissions office is 408.864.5300.

The program is designed to educate parents, children and commuters about traffic safety.
