Watermelon run at Fremont kicks off cross country

Randal Polgar must be getting tired of watermelon seeds.

This the third time in a row the Fremont High School senior has won the annual Fremont Watermelon Run.

The September footrace kicks off the high school cross country season. But the Watermelon Run is more of a community event than a sporting event, attracting runners of all ages and backgrounds.

Hundreds of runners—students, faculty, family and alumni—participated in the 21st Fremont Watermelon Run across the high school's campus.

Participants not only race to the finish line, they race towards the shining, wet prize—rows and rows of watermelons fresh for the taking.

All runners received free watermelons for taking part in the race. In all, there were 58 watermelons used for the event.
