Local Rotary seeks recipients of funding

Nonprofit agencies serving Cupertino residents are eligible to be the major beneficiary of the Cupertino Rotary Club's benefit golf tournament in 2004.

The tournament traditionally brings in from $35,000 to $55,000 for the selected primary recipient.

Representatives of agencies wishing to apply for the grant can obtain an application by contacting Orrin Mahoney at orrinmahoney@comcast.net or by calling 408.725.1767.

The deadline to submit applications is Nov. 30, and the selected beneficiary will be announced in December.

The annual golf tournament, which is co-sponsored by Hanson Permanente Cement, is planned for May 1, 2004.

Sally Lieber discusses domestic partners

Assemblywoman Sally Lieber (D-Mountain View) will hold a town hall meeting at Sunnyvale's city hall on Nov. 20 between 7 and 9 p.m.

Lieber wants to introduce AB205, the Domestic Partner Rights and Responsibilities Act, which Gray Davis signed into law on Sept. 19.

The law grants registered domestic partners virtually all of the same rights and responsibilities afforded to married spouses, but it does not impact rights, such as immigration rights, social security benefits, coverage under federal employment benefits laws, etc., afforded to spouses under federal law.

The new law will take effect on Jan. 1, 2005, and will impact California employers. Panelists from three statewide gay, lesbian and transgender organizations who have worked on the writing and passing of the legislation will talk about the differences between domestic partnership in California and full gay marriage and many other issues.
