Anita Crumlin almost didn't get to the Junior Olympic Level 6 California State Gymnastics championship meet.
It was minutes before the official start of the competition, and the Cupertino 12-year-old was sure that the navigational program in her father's car was taking them the wrong way. Just as the family was about to give up, Anita saw another gymnast dash out of her car and run inside a building. She followed the girl and made it just in time for the warm up—and then she really went to work.
Crumlin rolled up 35.90 points in the vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise to take the all-around title in her age group.
Crumlin nailed a 9.6 in the vault, the highest score in the meet in the event. She also won in her age group on the uneven bars, posting a 9.0.
The Cupertino Middle School seventh grader competes out of the California Sports Center in San Jose.
Allison Wu, a Cupertino 12-year-old who attends Kennedy Middle School, is another CSC gymnast who placed high at the state meet. Wu finished sixth in the all-around at 34.85 and was third on the bars at 8.875.
