After traveling a winless road in its first five games in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League, Lynbrook's girls basketball team won three of its next four, including a 46-36 triumph at Los Gatos last week.
Three players were in double figures for the Vikings with Nikki Chang's scored 14 points led the way. Freshman Emily Shen added 13 and Vickie Chien had 11.
Lynbrook outscored Los Gatos by 10 from the free-throw line and used a 10-2 third quarter to take a 10-point lead into the final period.
"We played zone the entire game," said Lynbrook coach Darrin Garcia. "We forced shotclock violations and a lot of turnovers."
The Vikings relied on long-range shooting for their first victories.
The Vikings blitzed the nets from three-point range against Monta Vista back on Jan. 28, connecting on 10 of 25 three-point attempts en route to a 46-36 win. Two games later, the Vikings buried eight three-balls, including six in the first half, sparking a 53-51 triumph at Milpitas.
Junior Jen Ling got hot and stayed hot against Monta Vista, dialing in four three-pointers and finishing with a team-high 16 points.
Tiffany Pan, Chien and Shen all buried two shots from behind the arc. Shen finished with nine points, Pan had eight and Chien six. Kim Lau, Melanie Wen and Sandra Kou all scored eight to lead Monta Vista.
Lynbrook never trailed at Milpitas, building a 19-point halftime lead then holding on for the two-point win. Chang, the only starter not to sink a three-point shot against Monta Vista, buried three against Milpitas.
Chang finished with a team-high 17 points. Chien had 13, Ling 10 and Laura Crisler seven. Chien and Ling both had two three-pointers and Crisler hit one.
Monta Vista broke into the win column recently after eight straight defeats, surprising Los Gatos 33-29. Sandra Kou's 13 points and Sophia Tam's eight paced the Matadors.
Mustangs in tight race
Homestead gained revenge against Palo Alto with an impressive 67-47 victory, handing Paly its second loss of division play. Homestead, Saratoga and Palo Alto enter the final week of play with two losses.
Becky Tratter scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to pace the win. Mandy Wald scored 16 and grabbed nine boards. Jenelle Kitasoe scored 12.
Two nights later, Homestead beat Lynbrook 56-37. Wald scored 20, Tratter 14 and Kitasoe 12 for the Mustangs, who improved to 8-2 in league play and 19-6 overall.
The two wins showed that Homestead had regrouped from a 50-44 loss at Saratoga. A strong second half was not enough to erase a 20-point halftime deficit against the Falcons. Tratter's 10 points and 12 rebounds paced the Mustangs. Junior Sandra Kiel scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds.
Cupertino wins again
Senior Sarah Hovland scored 19 points and junior Lisa Chang had 14 as Cupertino won its second El Camino Division game Friday night. The Pioneers surprised Fremont 47-41, two days after the Firebirds had knocked off league leader Mountain View.
Cupertino trailed by eight points at halftime, but outscored Fremont 12-8 in the third period before bursting ahead in the fourth. The Pioneers outscored Fremont 11-1 from the free-throw line.
Earlier, Cupertino just missed a victory against Los Altos. The Pioneers, after falling behind Los Altos 16-6 in the first quarter, tied the game on Viola Huang's free throw with five seconds left in the game. But, after a timeout, the Knights scored on a three-pointer to beat the buzzer and the Pioneers 49-46.
Dami Feyisetan paced Cupertino with 13 points and Amy Benson scored 11.
Homestead boys win
Homestead, which recently lost high-scoring junior Mark McLaughlin to a season-ending ankle injury, edged Fremont 57-55 for its third SCVAL De Anza Division win. David Ostrow and Domingo Emiano both poured in 16 points for the Mustangs. William Tsai added 10.
In El Camino play, 6-foot-3 junior Jonathan Hiley scored a career-high 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to spark Cupertino to a 55-50 win at Lynbrook.
The win moved the Pioneers' record to 7-3 in division play and 12-12 overall. They are chasing Mountain View and Saratoga in the El Camino standings. Sophomore guard Ehson Mortesaie scored 12 points and Greg Thacker had 10 for the Pioneers, who had to overcome 25 points from Viking standout Jacob Fine.
Earlier in the week, a hustle play by Mortezaie allowed him to score in the final second and give the Pioneers a 44-43 win against Santa Clara. Mortezaie finished the game with 14 points. Hiley paced Cupertino with 17.
Lynbrook, now 4-6, beat Santa Clara a week earlier 57-52. John Lee scored 17 points, Fine had 12 and Doug Bitney 10 to pace Lynbrook's win.
Monta Vista junior Jeff Clewett had a 19-point effort against Los Altos, but it wasn't enough to get the Matadors their first division win. Los Altos won 57-48. Senior Eric Peng had 11 in the loss.
