A complex set of exams and quizzes proved no problem for a group of seventh- and eighth-graders from St. Joseph of Cupertino School. On March 20, the St. Joseph's team placed first among the 21 other schools in the Diocese of San Jose's annual Academic Decathlon Championship, held at St. Francis High School in Mountain View. The 10 students took a logic test as a team and won first place in that competition. Individual students also took written exams in eight subject areas: science, current events, mathematics, fine arts, literature, religion, English and social studies. More than 200 students participated in the competition. The St. Joseph's team's victory scored it a spot in the State Academic Decathlon Championship on May 1. The students trained with two parent advisers at weekly study sessions. Thirteen additional sixth- and seventh-graders are primed and waiting in the wings as alternates.
