De Anza offers three candidate forums
By Allison Rost
The president's office at De Anza College hasn't had a permanent resident since Martha Kanter left last summer to become chancellor of the FoothillDe Anza Community College District. And while the committee is nearly ready to place someone in Kanter's chair, the public will still get a chance to weigh in on the three remaining candidates, in a series of upcoming meetings.

Jacqueline M. Jacobs, Henry T. Ingle and M. Brian Murphy will each address the De Anza community and the general public in separate, hour-long forums. The three candidates were chosen by a 13-member search committee, which engaged in paper screening and interviews after a national search and recruiting campaign.

Jacobs is currently vice president for instruction at Pasadena City College, where she was previously the dean of life sciences and allied health. She also worked in various administrative positions at California State University, Northridge. With a doctorate in botany from the University of Washington and a master's degree in science education from Fisk University, Jacobs was a biology professor at several universities and a scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena.

Henry T. Ingle is associate vice president for academic affairs at the University of Texas at El Paso, where he has worked since 1994, when he came to the school as a professor of communication. Before that, he was an executive director with the Educational Testing Service in San Francisco for three years. Ingle holds a doctorate in communication and education from Stanford University and a master's degree in educational telecommunications from Syracuse University.

M. Brian Murphy has been the executive director of the San Francisco Urban Institute at San Francisco State University since the program's beginnings in 1992. With his doctoral and master's degrees in political science from UC-Berkeley, he used his expertise as the chief of staff to former Assemblyman John Vasconcellos. He also held several positions in secondary education, including one as senior adviser to the chancellor of California State University between 1993 and 1998.

Jacobs will be the subject of the first forum, on April 14 between 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. in conference room B of the Campus Center. Ingle will speak April 15 and Murphy on April 19. The times and locations are the same for all three forums. All three candidates will follow the same timeline for the forum: giving an initial 10- to 15-minute presentation on their plans and qualifications and answering questions from the audience for the remaining time. The audience will then fill out feedback forms, and the information from those forms will be factored into the hiring decision, along with each candidate's final interview with Kanter.

De Anza, like many community colleges, is facing tremendous budget shortfalls, but Marisa Spatafore, spokeswoman for the district, said there are no restrictions on the directions of the presentations. "It's up to the candidate to frame their vision of what they see for De Anza College," she said.

Kanter will present her recommendation for the position to the FoothillDe Anza Board of Trustees in May.
