San Jose to provide animal care for Cupe
A million-dollar contract approved April 6 by the San Jose City Council means San Jose will now provide animal care services for Cupertino, Los Gatos, and Saratoga.
The three cities had previously partnered with Silicon Valley Animal Control Authority but decided to leave due to financial issues. Each city will pay San Jose a lump sum, followed by a yearly fee for 20 years beginning July 1.
Fees are scaled to each city's size and the number of animals expected from each. Cupertino kicks in the most, with a $500,000 down payment and $166,000 for the first year to cover operating costs.
The lump sums will go towards new kennels, cages, and a spay/neuter clinic in the Animal Care Center now under construction.
Services include capturing strays, shelter services for an estimated 1,800 animals a year and vaccination clinics.
