Pioneers, Vikes get busy on the track
By Mike Barnhart
Cupertino High track and field coach Paul Armstrong keeps his runners, jumpers and throwers busy—and productive. And the same goes for coach Darrin Garcia's stable over at Lynbrook.

At least that was the case recently: three meets in three days for many freshmen and sophomores.

There were Santa Clara Valley Athletic League varsity dual meets on April 1, the Frosh-Soph CCS Top 8 Meet at Los Gatos the next day, and the St. Francis Track and Field Carnival bright and early Saturday morning.

Among the busiest performers were Cupertino sophomores hurdlers Melanie Boyle and Erica Buchinski, jumper Travis Scibetta and middle distance runner Kimberly Chew; freshman distance runner Julianne Hansen; and Lynbrook's freshman middle distance ace, MayC Huang.

After Buchinski won the 100-meter high hurdles in 16.8 and Boyle took the triple jump at 32-5, helping the Pioneers defeat Saratoga 71-55 on Thursday, both placed in the top five of Friday's 100 hurdles race. Boyle was third in 17.27 and Buchinski fifth in 17.52.

Buchinski also was sixth in the 300 hurdles, and Boyle's triple jump of 32-7 was second, just ahead of third-place Michelle Ho (32-3) of Monta Vista. Then, at St. Francis, Boyle was second in the triple jump and ninth in the high hurdles, while Buchinski was seventh in both hurdles events.

Scibetta, who won the high jump and triple jump for the varsity boys against Saratoga, placed third in the Top 8 triple jump with a personal best 41-6 and fourth in the frosh-soph triple jump at St. Francis.

Hansen won the 3,200 at the Top 8 in 11:45, two places ahead of Monta Vista freshman Lisa Worsham (11:51), then took sixth in the girls mile at St. Francis in 5:31. Lynbrook's Huang (5:18) was second. Chew was fourth in the Top 8 1,600 meters and seventh in the St. Francis mile, running 5:25. Monta Vista's Angela Hsu was seventh in both events.

Huang's second at St. Francis capped a busy week. She had won the 800 in a 73-53 dual win over Wilcox, and placed third in the 800 at the Top 8 meet.

Monta Vista athletes also fared well at the Top 8. Sophomore Scott Russell won the boys 3,200 in 9:57 and Patrick Lee's leap of 6-0 gained second in the high jump. Julia Co (16-1) was second in the girls long jump, and Maria Nelson (100) and Emily Rubin (300 hurdles) earned fourths.

Lynbrook seniors Taimur Khan and Durrell Roberts were varsity boys winners at the St. Francis meet. Khan took the 400 dash in 49.36, the fastest time in the Central Coast Section this season, and the 300 hurdles in 40.93. Roberts won the 100-meter sprint in 11.21.

Lynbrook splits

Khan and Roberts were winners on April 8 as Lynbrook's boys stretched their unbeaten De Anza Division record to 4-0 with a 65-57 win at Los Altos. Khan and Andrew Xiao (110 highs) won the hurdle events. Roberts, Garrick Wong (200) and Justin Teng (400) placed first in the sprints.

Huang paced the Lynbrook girls at Los Altos, winning the 800 and 1,600, but the Vikings lost 69-53 to the Eagles and fell to 1-3. Seniors Aya Wakabayashi (3,200) and Casie Wheat (shot put) were the only other winners for the Vikings.

Boyles leads Pioneers

Junior Stacie Boyle, who had placed third in the 300 hurdles at St. Francis, and Buchinski led the way on April 8. Boyle won the 400 and 800, while Buchinski barely finished ahead of Stacie's sister, Melanie, in the hurdle races.

Boyle's 2:33.2 led a Cupertino sweep in the two-lapper, just edging Chew (2:33.5). Freshman Alamelu Natesan, who had won the 3,200 against Saratoga, was third in 2:41.

Buchinski ran 17.18 in the 100 hurdles, nosing out Melanie Boyle. In the 300, Buchinski ran 52.12 and finished six-tenths ahead of Boyle.

Melanie Boyle's 33-2 keyed a sweep of the triple jump. Freshman Emily Saneski (29-4) was second, an inch better than junior Carolyn Hansen. Saneski won the long jump (14-0) and took third in the high jump.

Julianne Hansen won the 3,200, after finishing a step behind Chew (5:37) in the 1,600. Another ninth-grader, Brittany Palacio, was second in the 100. Carolyn Hansen was second in the 200 and Lisa Chang was second in the high jump.

Sophomore Turel Karaman's high jumped 6-1, a personal best by seven inches. Other winners were Scibetta (39-3) in the triple jump, David Rabinovitz (2:10.5) in the 800 and Ryan Vicente in the 100 and 200.

Arthur Teschera was second in both the long jump and triple jump. Junior hurdler Dennis Chan picked up a second (100) and a third (300). Weihow Hsue (2:12) was second in the 800 and Kevin Van was second in the 300 hurdles.

Mats top Falcons

Rachel Doran and Co each won two girls events at De Anza College on April 8. Doran won the 100 in 12.75 and the high jump at 4-8. Co took the long jump (14-5) and triple jump (32-2). Hannah Young hurled the discus 94-1, her best effort this year. Hurdler Kylie Ratkovich (100) and sprinter Megan O'Rourke (200) also were winners.

Senior Bobby Kritzer was a triple winner for the second meet in a row as Monta Vista's boys raised their El Camino Division record to 3-1. Kritzer, whose best efforts this season lead the SCVAL in the long jump (22-4) and triple jump (45-1), won both of his specialties and the high jump against Mountain View and Saratoga.

Against Saratoga, junior Jason Yow took the 800 in 2:04, freshman Ian LaForm won the 1,600 in 4:42 and senior Nick Bedell won the 300 hurdles in 42.9.

Ian Thayer sprinted to two wins against the Spartans, going 11.57 in the 100 and 23.47 in the 200. Yow (1,600), Bedell (300 hurdles), Chris Rudder (400) and Matt Paquet (3,200) also were event winners.

Homestead falls

Homestead sophomore Christina Fukumoto won three field events and junior Sandra Kiel had her season best in the shot put on April 8. Fukumoto long jumped 16-4, triple jumped 32-11 and hurled the discus 92-3, while Kiel heaved the shot 35-0.

Mustang senior Domingo Emiano won the boys long jump (19-10) and triple jump (40-7). William Tsai took the discus (140-0).

Mats outswim Pioneers

Seniors Shasha Brophy and Nicole Ley and sophomore Dominique Lazarovici were double winners, leading the Monta Vista girls swim team to a 106-64 non-league victory over Cupertino on April 6. The Matadors also won the boys competition 113-37.

Brophy won the girls 100-meter freestyle and the 200 free. Ley took the 50 free and 100 backstroke. Lazarovici was first in the 500 free and the 200 individual medley. Junior Queena Dai won the 100 breaststroke.

Cupertino sophomore Megan Weber won the 100 butterfly. The Cupertino team of Alicia Zhou, Karin Tanaka, Sarah Hovland and Jessica Buzawa won the medley relay.

Kevin Luu of Monta Vista won the boys 200 IM and the 100 breast. He also swam on two winning relay units. Josh Overby of Cupertino won the 200 free and 500 free.
