Man accosts woman on trail

The Mountain View Police have just issued a warning to women using the Stevens Creek Trail. On March 29 at approximately 7:45 p.m. two women were walking southbound toward Landels School on the Stevens Creek Trail. As they walked under the Dana Street overpass, a man attacked one of them from behind.

According to police, the man grabbed the victim between her legs from behind, which knocked her to her knees. The man landed on top of the woman and continued to grope her genitals. The other woman screamed but the man did not stop for about three to five more seconds.

While still screaming, the second woman charged the man who ran northbound on the trail toward Evelyn Avenue. The police believed that the man had been hiding in the shadows of darkness on the trail under the overpass, and the women never saw him approach.

The police describe the man as a white adult in his 30s. The women said he had an athletic build, was approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall and 165 pounds. He was clean shaven and had light brown to orange-red colored hair. He was last seen wearing a light gray, hooded, long sleeve sweatshirt; black or dark colored fitted running pants and athletic shoes.

For the public's safety, the trail is closed 30 minutes after dusk.

The police suggest users of the trail exercise with friends or a dog, carry pepper spray and a cell phone.

Anyone with information should contact Detective Julie Fragomeli at 650.903.6364.

Local math student
competition on TV

Local high school students will soon make their television debuts doing what they do best— math.

Students from Homestead and Fremont high schools will face off in game 4 of the Math Squares Tournament, airing on Apr. 22 on KTEH and local cable access stations.

The competition, the first made-for-TV tournament spearheaded by Silicon Valley Instructional Television, challenges teams from high schools throughout the county with problems chosen from a tic-tac-toe board. Each team gets 45 seconds to solve a problem.

The four winners of the first round will advance, and the championship game will air on May 3 and 4.

The Homestead/Fremont competition will air Apr. 22 at 3:30 p.m. with a re-broadcast on Apr. 26.

Businesses needed to host students

Daughters aren't the only ones taken to work any longer. On Apr. 30, students from Monta Vista High School will follow local employees through a normal day on the job as part of Groundhog Job Shadow Day.

But first, the Cupertino Chamber of Commerce needs employees to shadow and is asking for assistance from area businesses.

The typical day for the student lasts from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with an overview of the company, a tour and a discussion of teamwork.
