Ghosh leads Lynbrook to swimming title
By Mike Barnhart
Lynbrook sophomore swimming sensation Nilasha Ghosh already had produced three amazing efforts, including an All-America butterfly performance, during the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division finals.

But entering the last event of a long afternoon at Fremont High's aquatics center, the Vikings needed something else special from Ghosh and sophomore teammates Jessica Chen and Jenny Wei and junior Eileen Shu.

The Vikings needed the quartet to win the 400-yard freestyle relay in order to overtake Los Gatos and capture the varsity girls championship. Los Gatos, led by seniors Gabriella Hdez and Kelsey Hunter, entered the last race with a five-point lead, 380-375.

Ghosh, who earlier had turned in a blazing butterfly performance during the medley relay and had set new league records in the 100 fly and 200 free races, was up first against Hdez, winner of the 200 individual medley and the 100 free. Hdez was fast, coursing the four lengths of the 25-yard pool in 52.92. But Ghosh was faster, touching the wall at 51.28.

Chen and Shu added to the lead and Wei staved off Hunter during the anchor leg. The Lynbrook unit posted a meet record time of 3:44.18 and, more importantly, clinched the team title by the narrowest of margins, 415-414. Cupertino finished third in the team scoring with 362 points.

It was a big day for coach Lance Morrill's Lynbrook program, as the Vikings also earned championships in the boys varsity and junior varsity divisions. Los Gatos ran away with the girls JV crown and Cupertino took second.

Next up for the El Camino's top individuals and relay teams is the Central Coast Section meet May 1415 at Independence High in San Jose. After the diving competition on May 13, swimming preliminaries will take place on May 14, beginning at 10 a.m. The finals are set to begin at 1 p.m. the next day.

Lynbrook's varsity boys, paced by junior Michael Wang's meet record in the 100 free and the 400 free relay team's victory, scored 447 points. Cupertino, led by senior sprinter Michael Jarvis, was second with 351 points. Fremont, with three individual champions and a record-setting medley relay team, took third with 282.

Lynbrook's girls got off to a great start by winning the medley relay. Wei, who would later edge teammate Liana Wildeboer for the 100 back title, gave the Vikings a quick lead by backstroking the first 50 yards in 30.56. After senior SongQian Li extended the lead during the breaststroke, Ghosh zipped through the fly in 26.33. Chen went 26.17 on her freestyle leg and closed out the Vikings' romp of 1:56.80.

Ghosh's record 1:52.45 in the 200 free was more than six seconds better than runner-up Kelsey Hunter. The margin of victory in the butterfly was even greater.

Ghosh gracefully glided out in front of the pack and was more than three seconds ahead of the closest challengers after the first 50 yards. She finished in 56.16, well under the 57.30 standard that gains All-America status. Fremont's Angela Cascone took second in 1:06.32.

Other varsity girls winners included Cupertino senior Jenna Overby in the 50 free. Overby and teammates Megan Weber, Sarah Hovland and Jessica Buzawa took second in the 200 free relay, finishing just .09 behind Los Gatos.

Overby, whose 25.97 in the 50 edged Chen (26.18) and Buzawa (26.22), also placed fourth in the 100 free behind Hdez (54.04), Wei and Chen. Weber finished third in the 100 back. Hovland finished second to Hdez in the 200 IM and Lynbrook's Li was third.

Li earned second in the 100 breast, touching just before Los Gatos' Katie Sweeney and Cupertino's Hovland.

Lynbrook's varsity boys were led by Wang and freshman Brandt Robinson. Wang, who finished second in the 50 free, .33 behind Cupertino's Jarvis (22.45), surged on the final 25 yards of the 100 race to overtake Jarvis at the touch in a league record time of 48.64. Cupertino junior Craig Whyte (24.23) was fourth in the 50 free and 100 fly.

Jarvis later anchored Cupertino's victorious 200 free relay team, following freshman Derrik Jarvis, Whyte and junior Alex Donoghue. Their time was 1:34.79. Donoghue was third in the 100 free, and sophomore teammate Josh Overby placed second in the 500 free in 4:47.79.

Robinson led off and Wang anchored the 400 free relay, sandwiching around sophomores Kevin Piercy and Andrew Wu. Wang, with a 48.87 split, again rallied in the final 25 yards to pull out a victory in 3:26.48.

Robinson, who placed second in both the 100 back (58.51) and 100 fly (56.75), started the Vikings' medley relay that surpassed the old league record by .01. But Robinson, Wu, freshman Matt Chen and Wang had to settle for second behind Fremont's team, which claimed the new league record with 1:43.99.

Wu scored second places in the 200 IM and 100 breast behind Fremont athletes who set new league records. Cupertino's Paolo Basilio was third in the 200 IM and Lynbrook's Chen was fourth.

Lynbrook was a winner in five of the JV boys events, while Cupertino girls won four races.

Viking Kevin Kuang won the 100 free in 56.82, a new league record, and the 200 free in 2:08.58. Teammate Kevin Chou set a new league mark while winning the 100 IM in 1:03.97. Kuang, Chou, Jacob Parrish and David Li, all sophomores, combined to win the 400 free relay in a record time of 3:51.99.

Another Lynbrook 10th-grader, Joe Shao, established a new record in the 100 breast when he edged teammate Matt Snyder, the previous record-holder. Shao finished in 1:11.66 and Snyder in 1:12.33.

Cupertino freshman Sachi Ujifusa took the JV girls 100 IM, then set a new league mark in the 100 back. Teammate Karerya Feoktistova set a league record in the 100 breast (1:21.42). The two then joined Emily Chang and Elis Neys in winning the 400 free relay.
