Before potential blood donors head off for summer vacations, the American Red Cross needs their help.

The organization is looking for sponsors to hold blood drives at their businesses and schools to help the Red Cross reach its goal of a five to seven day blood supply in California in case of a disaster. Thirty percent of the current two-day supply is brought in from other states.

Those interested in sponsoring a blood drive must be able to supply at least 40 donors and a room of a thousand square feet or larger for one day. Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh over 110 pounds and be in good health.

Topic at Cupertino forum is identity theft

The city of Cupertino and the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office will hold a free presentation on identity theft May 27 between 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. at Quinlan Community Center, 10185 N. Stelling Road.

Experts from the U.S. Postal Service, the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office and the district attorney's office will present important identity-theft-prevention information.

All members of the public are invited and do not need to make reservations.

National Trails Day

All hikers and gonna-be hikers can help spruce up one of the trails at Stevens Creek County Park in Cupertino during National Trails Day, June 5.

The Santa Clara Department of Parks and Recreation along with REI, a retail business selling outdoor/sports gear, are hosting a trail maintenance project that day for pruning overgrowth on the Tony Look Trail.

No prior experience is necessary, and the park staff will provide all tools and supervision.

Each participant will receive a commemorative T-shirt at the end of the project. But because the group size is limited to 40, pre-registration is recommended.
