Left-handed flame thrower Matt McCormick stood on top of the hill for the Tri Cities Little League senior division all-stars in their first game of the sectionals tournament against Almaden from District 12.
McCormick threw a complete game and allowed just two runs, but unfortunately the offense behind him was only able to come up with a single run in his support and Tri Cities lost 2-1. McCormick had eight strikeouts on the day, but the damage was done.
It wasn't until the bottom of the fourth that Tri Cities scored its only run. Leo Haley led off the inning with a line single to left, followed by Aaron Hendrick, who reached on a slow roller through the left side. Two batters and an out later, Jimmy Trask hammered a hard line drive single up the middle to load the bases. Richard Kurasaki reached on a throwing error that scored the only run of the game for Tri Cities.
Hendrick singled in the bottom of the first, but was left stranded. Trask led off the last of the second with a ground ball to the left side that he beat out for an infield hit, but he was thrown out by the catcher after taking too big of a lead at first.
Rounding out the Tri Cities squad are Taylor Yemm, Chase Hill, Nick Palermo, Johnny Mardesich, Chris Haley and Michael Domen.
Tri Cities won the berth in the sectional by taking Cupertino American 2-1 in the District 44 championship game.
Trask tossed five innings to get the mound win, striking out six and allowing just a hit and a run.
Hill led an eight-hit attack for the champs with a double and two singles. It was his single to right-center in the bottom of the fourth that drove home both runs for Tri Cities.
Cupertino American's Adam Khan was stuck with the tough pitching loss, despite going the distance to flip an eight-hitter. Khan struck out three.
Tony Perez singled, walked and was hit by a pitch, reaching base three times for Cupertino American. The visitors scored their only run in the second by virtue of a single and three walks. Tri Cities got the final out of the inning by gunning down a runner at the plate.
