Not up to council to question festival books
On July 6 the financial manager of our city verified to the city council that Moon Festival accounts kept by treasurer Ed Grant are clean and accurate and that no income was ever concealed or withheld.
This is good news for the board of directors, for our festival volunteers, and for the Chinese-American community.
Our annual Moon Festival still provides a wonderful display of people uniting for cross-cultural understanding. It's a time for family togetherness and happiness, especially in our big "community family."
I hope that harmony can be restored within the city council now. Mayor Sandy James has already questioned whether any individual council member has the power to order an examination into festival books when that was never a condition for the original permit. Council members Richard Lowenthal and Dolly Sandoval concurred.
Neither Kris Wang nor any council member should abuse the power of office by requesting (ordering?) City Manager David Knapp or any employee to do something not previously authorized. The reputation of the Moon Festival has been damaged by willful and unfounded charges, and should be restored by those responsible.
I love this event, and hope that once again we can all enjoy it at Memorial Park on Sept. 18 and19, with the support of our extended civic family.
