Chase Huebner was staring over the net at Simon Cheng and Steve Richards during the Central Coast Section boys tennis doubles finals last May.
But the high school opponents turned club teammates this summer, and the three helped the Courtside Tennis Club's 18-year-old team to a state championship.
Huebner had joined forces with Los Gatos teammate Lee Gerston to defeat the Leland pair 6-7 (8-10), 6-4, 6-2 in the CCS title match, but this summer he teamed with Cheng, Richards, Ron Huang of Lynbrook, Jon Teel of Los Gatos and Daniel Lee of Monta Vista to win the Northern California championship and earn a place in the Gar Glenney Cup event held Aug. 2122 at UCLA.
Courtside combined with the Blossom Hill Aces, the girl 18 NorCal champ, to face the Southern California champions in the Gar Glenney Cup tourney. The format featured four boys and four girls in singles play, two boys and two girls doubles bouts and four mixed doubles matches.
Courtside had sent representatives in each of the 18, 15 and 12 age brackets after winning five of the six Northern California titles. The locals won the boys 18, 15 and 12 crowns and also the girls 15 and 12 titles. But only the 18s won in Gar Glenney Cup play.
Richards won at No. 4 singles and teamed with Katherine Dicconson of the Aces to take the No. 2 mixed doubles match to lead Northern California to a 10-6 win over the Seacliff Tennis Club. Dicconson also won at No. 4 singles.
Haley Hemm was also a double winner for NorCal, teaming with Mia Giavanetti at No. 2 girls doubles and with Lee at No. 3 mixed doubles.
Mark Waylonis and Sarah Rose Capello came through with a clutch win at No. 3 mixed doubles.
Courtside had rolled to a 6-3 win over Kennedy of Sacramento in the NorCal finals. Richards won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and teamed with Cheng for an 8-4 win over No. 2 doubles, and Huebner won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 4 singles and joined with Lee for an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles. Lee won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles and Teel won 6-0, 6-4 at No. 3.
A combined Courtside squad lost 9-7 to Oxnard Tennis Center in the Gar Glenney Cup finals, despite a superb effort by Patrick Brogan of Los Gatos.
Brogan won all three of the matches he played in, winning at No. 1 singles, at No. 1 boys doubles with Joe Zielazinski of Mountain View and at No. 1 mixed doubles with Anita Athavale of Mitty. Zielazinski joined Nicole Low for a win at No. 2 mixed doubles.
Wins by Brogan, D.J. James of Bellarmine, Zielazinski, Kurt Chong of Leigh, Simon Wu of Thatcher and Stace Klinger of Leland had lifted the Courtside boys to a 6-0 win over Broadstone of Sacramento in the NorCal 15 finals.
Athavale, Tiffany Nguyen of Monta Vista, Roxy Pourmirzaie of Leland, Kelsey Marsh of Saratoga, Amanda Borsom and Jamie Solomon sparked the Courtside girls to a win over Rolling Hills of Sacramento in the NorCal 15 finals.
Eric Johnson won at No. 2 singles and Matt Roberts at No. 4, but the NorCal 12s lost 14-2 to the Westwood Club at the Gar Glenney.
Roberts, Johnson, Mike McGinnis, Andrew Hsieh, Garrett Taylor, Jimmy Castellanos, Kevin Brogan, Brent Johnson, Tim Nguyen and Trevor James all played for the Courtside 12 team that beat Broadstone 8-1 in the NorCal tourney.
The Courtside girls beat Alpine Hills 6-3 in the NorCal 12 finals with Nikku Beherman, Jacqueline Scherr, Tomoka Yamamoto, Lauren Liu, Caroline O'Haren, Tarn Nguyen and Valerie Motro were members of the Courtside team.
