St. Joseph's has its first Fun Festival in 32 years
By Allison Rost
Thirty-two years is a long break, but the students and parents of St. Joseph of Cupertino School are refreshed and ready to go for their first community carnival since 1972. Dubbed the Family Fun Festival, the carnival takes place at the school from Oct. 15 to 17.

"The board thought it would be nice to revive the tradition," says Donna Krey, a volunteer with the carnival. "There are members of the church who remember the old carnivals, and they wanted to give this newer generation a chance to create their own memories."

St. Joseph's began its yearly carnivals just after the school opened in the fall of 1955. The rides and games continued for 17 years, but the carnival stopped when volunteers couldn't handle it anymore.

This year, being shorthanded should not be a problem. Every parent at the school is volunteering at least one three-hour shift, and with 250 families at the school, that should cover most of the three-day event. All proceeds will go to support the school's educational programs.

The separation of three decades has given rise to a whole new level of festival. "I don't think they had jump houses 30 years ago," Krey says.

This year, Taiko drummers and martial arts experts are just a few of the groups slated to perform. There will also be a community talent show, food and beverage booths and several gift shops. The Santa Clara County Fire Department will have a fire engine on display, and the Sheriff's Office will provide fingerprinting for children.

Volunteers hope that a successful, snag-free carnival this year will pave the way for the event to return as an annual affair. But even if it doesn't, St. Joseph's has still seen the benefit. "Planning this has really brought the church and school communities together," Krey says.

Hours for the Family Fun Festival are 5 to 10 p.m. on Oct. 15, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Oct. 16 and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Oct. 17. St. Joseph of Cupertino School is located at 10120 N. De Anza Blvd. For more information, call 408.252.6441 or visit www.sjcschool.org.
